I started when i was 6 (now 14) and its so small in SA, i havnt seen someone under the age of 25 sailing in SA for that whole time. Other than my brother but he isn't as into it as i am. Average age at boggy lake would be over 30-40 i reckon. Same at goolwa. Seems to be heaps bigger in WA and theres a few young windsurfers around there.

to jordo,

no that pic isnt me although i hope it will be soon.
the go is great in winds under 18kts but over 18kts and its out of control. i was very lucky to get my s.f.'s i just caught some tourists from maui at pelican point and was able to buy two of the sails off them. the other s.f. i bought from alberto at windshack.
and i do wear a wetsuit, a radiator and boots but it still seems freezing cold.

good luck and good wind,
Jet

isnt it like warm over in WA!!!! try being down here in south aussie. then u will see wat cold is! hey dzub i know of atleast 6 young guns in sa. i think thats a pretty good effort considering the surf is so good down here. just about every man and his dog surfs!!! it takes heaps more skill to windsurf.

i started when i last year, any way, bubs, i think the whole thing of getting out of school to go sailin has somthing to do with refusing to do anything untill you get your first sail in, aka, dont get out of bed, and than eventually your parrents get sick enough of listening to you complain they let you do what you want im workin on my parrants atm with letting me get half wensdays allthe time, because i have double study after lunch, and getting to school late on fridays, but i think i will do that anyway, so i dont go to extented form

I'm 13, started windsurfing at 12 on a 220L wally board and a 3.2m trainer sail. Now I have a 117L Starboard Starsurfer and usually sail on a 6m sail (actually want to get a new one). I had to get a job as a Mc slave to afford my new board though.

you have a job at maccas and your 13, i thought you had to be 14, but if you want a really good job, i am a kitchen hand/dish washer, and its great, you get really good pay and i only work 2 nights a week, and get from 70 to 90 buks a week, sometimes more, and in the holidays when you work real late, (12.30 or 1.30am) you get close to 150 buks, so if you want a good job that will not interfere with your windsurfing, (unles you windsurf at night) you should go and apply around your local restraunts, and also, 117ltrs is that your smallest board because that seems realyl big for a 13 yearold, or do u only get really lite wind where you live, and cant use a sinker?

Lol, no the smallest board I sail is 100 litres *gasp*. The reason I sail on a bigger board is because I can use it in lots of conditions. (I'm poor and can only afford one!)

I'm 19 and I started windsurfing at the start of this year. It's an awesome sport, but damn queensland, there's hardly ever good wind here. I haven't been windsurfing for a ages now. Hoping to go for a blast this weekend. Fingers crossed

At Dobroyd Aquatic Club in Sydney, we've got about a dozen or more guys or girls from 8 to 15 years old who have their own gear. Most have their one Junior Ones (ie Wally One Designs with a rig under 4.5m), but in some cases they just have their own small rig that goes on their parent's board. There's also a dozen or so kids who sometimes windsurf on borrowed gear.

Illawarra Yacht Club in Wollongong has about four teens racing longboards (more of them are moving to Wallies/Junior Ones this year) and a few more learning.

Down in Yarrawonga, there's a very strong junior programme. The guy who runs it is getting five new Wallies this year, to join his existing boards.

And when a new kid's rig gets delivered to Darwin soon, we'll have kids on Wallies or J1s from top (NT) to bottom (Hobart) of the east coast.

Why the Wally? The Australian Windsurfing Association (which is basically run by Speed/Formula sailors, not Wally sailers) chose the J1 version of the Wally as the kid's board because it's cheap, super tough, and the kids can sail it in all conditions. With a Barracouta 3.5 or 4.5, it goes pretty damn well in the light stuff and the kids can handle the big breeze - about four times last year the DAC racing was canned for too much wind but the top kids went out and had a ball! And it's great for kid's stuff like just messing around without being too serious.

The Barracouta 3.5 and 4.5 rigs look old school but they work brilliantly on the Wally board. They also work okay on a shortboard, so if kids want to get into slalom/waves/freeride etc they can just pick up a free old board from somewhere and learn shortboarding with their Barracouta J1 rig. Some may argue that a widestyle board is better - if so, we welcome them setting up their own programme. We just believe that simple and cheap gear that kicks ass in light stuff is vital if the sport is to get anything like its old strength back.

Yachting Australia has chosen the Bic Techno 293 OD hybrid as the Junior/Youth board. It is hugely popular overseas. YA and the Techno programme can take care of the pressure cooker for the elite, we Wally sailors are happy just to get kids out there and sailing.
