Yeah, I am having the same problems... I have just bought a Sandisk "high-speed" card and am running some tests (walking, biking, etc). I can occasionally reproduce the "fail and turn-off" bug using the old card, but I haven't had enough time with the new card. I have found that is doesn't matter whether it is binary or NMEA mode, it still turns itself off.
I think it turns-off when a) it fails to write to the card, or b) there is a satellite locking problem - I cant tell which since the unit doesn't log any errors.
In reality it should never turn itself off -> it should show an error-popup or something that advises the user that there was a problem. It should also recover from the error and do a soft-reset so that it could open a new file for writing.
Also, given that there is no practical reason to use the on-board memory for track logging (since the SD card is much bigger and is supposed to work...), the on-board memory should be used for other stuff, such as logging bugs, soft-resets, on-fix failures, etc.
