I've only just started sailing again after a break so just started using my 965 to record that as a SUP activity.
Just so as people are aware, there are only a handful of Garmin activity profiles that are suitable for speed sailing.
- Suitable activity profiles include windsurf, kiteboard and other.
- Unsuitable activity profiles include SUP, surf, sailing and boating.
The only real choice on a Forerunner is "other" because it doesn't offer windsurf or kiteboard to users. The bike activity profile may look ok for much of the time, but it implements its own unique filtering, related to walk / cycle detection.
You can change the activity type in Garmin Connect, but it doesn't change the underlying data. Apps can use the full list of activity profiles, including windsurf and kiteboard, even if the watch itself does not offer them to the user.
Regarding Strava, it ignores Doppler speeds and calculates speeds from the positional data. As such, speeds are Strava should not be trusted, even for the Airoha-based watches. Strava is best thought of as a diary with a nice colorful map, but untrustworthy for speeds.
