Hi all

I am living in Upper Mount Gravatt, Brisbane. I am a beginner-level windsurfer (ok to tack and practicing gybe). I want to buddy up some windsurfers with similar skill levels. It would be more fun to play windsurfing together.

I am going to practice windsurfing during the long Xmas holidays. If you are interested in going together rather than sailing alone, send me a message.

mate wellington point is great place to sail. works in all wind directions and has sailors of all levels.

If you think a 40 minute drive is too far to drive for a sail then you aren't going to sail very often. You have to travel in SE Qld to sail to the spots where it's working on any given day. It's not a backyard sport and good spots are limited.

I don't think it takes 40 minutes. It already takes 45 minutes from garden city to strathpine. thank you for your lecture.

gday mate, im still learnin and youll find the wind strength your after means the experienced guys wont be to interested , so youll have to practice a fair bit on your own. but pick the right place (shallowish and onshore winds) and just enjoy the solitude, its pretty rare in this world. ive had some awesome 10 knot cruises at beachmere with not a soul in site.cool! im pickin up the pace a bit now and startin to plain frequently , so other sailors are about more. so go anyway or youll miss out.(get a life jacket if your not a good swimmer} p.s. if im headin sth for a sail i'l contact you ...cheers

Wasn't a lecture just trying to make you realise that you are going to have to travel if you want time on the water. Drive South then because if it's more than 40 minutes to Bribie it's got to be no more than 40 or 50 minutes to the Gold Coast or Wellington Point. The way i see it was you got a generous offer from someone who was prepared to sail with you and give you some pointers and try to help you out all of which eats into his sailing time and you weren't prepared to travel too far to do it and who knows you might have even ended up with a new mate. When i was just starting out i would have driven 1 1/2 or more for the same offer no questions asked.
I live on the Gold Coast and it quite often takes me 30 minutes to get to my local sailing spots on the Gold Coast just because of traffic. I have been known to travel 2 hours each way to sail on consecutive days and the second day there was no wind that's just the nature of this sport but i do it because i love it. What's worth it to you is for you to decide. I wish i didn't have to travel to sail as well but i do and nearly every person that does it has to some extent. Lecture over

There were 4 people sailing today in less than ten knots at wellington point. It will always be hard to coordinate with others. Just go and don't be shy about talking to the locals. You will be best friends before you know it. It will also be more beneficial for you to chat with more advanced sailors rather than just beginers.

Geez Nacra, I have lived on the Coast for years and have never had the need to travel great distances , admittedly there have been times when there has been a lack of wind but the the spots 40minutes away would not have much either except perhaps in the westerlies when bayside is better.
Living in Mt Gravatt, The Train or KFC / Central Street would be within reasonable commuting distance and a pretty safe option.

I don't HAVE to travel but if there is somewhere that is working better for the prevailing wind then i will do it. eg: would be Wello in a westerly if i haven't sailed for a couple of days but i will say that Wello is a last resort especially on a lowish tide. I recon Shearwater leaves Wello for dead but even it takes me up to 40 minutes some days depending on traffic to get there from Reedy Creek. If i can't get out on the water at least 2 or 3 times a week i get very edgy. Then i just end up going to the shop and buying something. It gets real expensive when we don't get wind. They love it my bank account doesn't.
I will admit that i'm obsessed and will gladly drive to Beachmere from the Goldy if the conditions are right up there because it's AWESOME fun. It's about experiencing different areas and conditions too. The last thing i think about is how far i've driven or how much my gear has cost when i'm having an awesome sail. It's just irrelevant to me. I would rather spend 3 or 4 hours total driving to have an awesome time than spend 3 or 4 hours on the water chugging around in rubbish and getting frustrated. Conditions are my selection criteria not distance.

i know it's currently summer, but during our winter i totally agree with naccas. it tends to be a choice of shearwater or wello (generally the most reliable) or viccy point as a decent long session options where one can sail for several hours in decent wind, and that will probably mean somewhat of a drive for most people

I will travel all over for a sail, its part of the adventure for me plus you get to meet lots of different people. Best thing of all is you learn to sail in lots of different conditions. Good on you fella, keep getting out there where you feel comfortable and then start to adventure out.

Actually, all he said was that Bribie was a bit far, fair enough! your comments Naccas were opinion not fact.

So it looks like he is going to sail at Upper Mt Gravatt, i don't think so. He IS going to have to drive to sail that is a fact and from there i recon about 30-40 minutes to anywhere that's what i was trying to say. Ok Bribie might be too far maybe an hour or so.

Actually we might be able to set him up with one of Haircuts tiny little home made freestyle fins that would be lucky to bottom out in a puddle and that would solve the fin damage problem. Other than that it's still brooom brooom.

Whats this Happy Xmas stuff I'm hereing it a lot lately, when i was younger it was Merry Xmas and Happy New Year

In keeping with the topic, I hate to drive more than 5 mins now, so i rarely sail off the Redcliffe peninsula and most the time at queens, i sometimes drive down for a look then go back and get the boards if its good.

20 years ago it was different, used to drive about an hour sometimes if the wind was good and sleeping in the board bag overnight if it was real good and even drove from townsville to sunny coast a few times

So getting back to the subject, Im pretty much in the same situation Winddragon, it would be good to meet up for a sail at some point. Ive been going to manly or redcliffe, I figure if I need to got the extra distance to Wello I could sail over. I was thinking of driving up to Lake cotharabah and staying the night to get a good day and a half in but Im not sure Ill make it, its a bit far, HA! I should work at BCF selling fishing lures. Anyway I may not have the time, have to get out there somewhere over the break though.
