was a grerat day today. heading to the beach i was wondering where the wind was but wasn't dissapointed as i arrived at north kirra. blew 15-20 knots all day!

the wind had a little bit too much east in it to make things easy getting out and the massive current meant everyone lost power just when they needed it.

still as the day progressed the gutter started to appear and offered some good runs in close helping everyone to either get out through the break or just find a calmer spot to blast back and forth. late arvo saw us fire up the bbq. a few headed back out again and a couple over to the pub.

we had about 20 people all up hit the surf, great turn out! lots of colour on the water. the gear of choice was neil pryde sails and JP boards. lots of big airs to watch and a few little backside wave rides.

i have about 400 images from the day that i have started going through and hope to have them online in a day or 2.

big thanks to the team at SurfFX for supporting the event and to all the crew that came along. a great day all up.

Saw the WindWanders meet by chance the night before and crawled down there (Pacific Highway was very slow in spots).

Kirra was too much onshore but a great opportunity to get back into it with some very long rides inside the break. The tide seemed to work in favour allowing an arched angle of attack up the beach. With the small reforming waves there were a few sections that you could repeatedly turn up and down the face (and at least imagine that the wave was bigger). Managed to get out a few times but it was a bit hit and miss with a dumping side-on breaking zone. Was it any easier much further up the beach?

Good to see so many other guys and gals out there. Great to explore a new spot and different conditions than I'm used to.

Some SurfFX flags next time might make it more obvious where the "meet" and BBQ was. Although I specifically picked a spot to launch a couple of hundred meters north.

Is this a regular event and are different spots selected every time?

Hi Roger,

yep the Kirra meet is an anual meet we will be back again next year. however next year we will most likely hold the meet further up the beach to the northern side of the gutter.

the club visits locations that cater for flat water through bump and jump and small surf. we have one more wave meet on the cards this year which will be at mooloolaba. i guess some people would call mooloolaba more bump and jump than surf. we hold meets at redcliffe, brisbane, sunshine coast and one meet at burrum heads just south of bundaberg.

there is also a wave club in SEQ that hold meets. if you are looking to specialize in wave sailing they may suit more.

the qld clubs have reciprocal memberships so if you join one you can attend any of the others. what we normally suggest is that you join the club that you feel caters for you the most then attend the others whenever you choose.

The wanderers club is a social club, the idea of the club is to focus on the social side of the sport. we try different locations over a wide spread of disciplines and encourage the lesser experienced by venue choice while still providing something for the more experienced. we also try to find new venues to spice things up.

that said, we are always looking for ways to improve the club and get new members onboard.

what gear were you on? i might have some photos of you that i can pass on.

Good job with the photos Justin!

Next time get a water proof Cam and at least get wet you slacker! I have a waterproof snapshot type cam that does great quality video but be buggered if I can organise how to ride on my kite and strap the thing on to me or the kite! Thanks for getting a photo of Simon and me amongst the guys Windsurfing the gutter.....was my first outing on my new kite so was nice to have some decent wind to give it a try.

BTW If any of the guys are looking to double there fun or just have a light wind solution and want to buy a cheap kite for the surf, the one I was riding in the 9m size is available from the NZ rep for AUD$600 delivered excluding the bar and lines which cost an extra $300. I'm 90kg and was on a 12m and would have almost been able to get away with the 9m on Saturday as the 12m was becoming a handful at times so if you around 75-80kg or less the 9m would be perfect for 15-25 knots after which crank up the sailboard. Oh and before I get flamed I have windsurfed for almost 20 year's but since moving from WA to QLD and at my weight just couldn't get out on a windsurfer often enough and did want to try something else as I was getting a little jaded with Windsurfing up in Brisbane where I lived for 10 years.....

Nice to catchup with a few familiar faces!

Those photos you posted look great. Do you use a tripod? What lens/distance are they from?

Yes please if you managed to snap a few of me that would be fantastic. Was on the water from around 12. Sailed a red Starboard Acid 77 with a yellow/white Sailworks 4.8m.

i had a waterproof video camera with me but decided to stay on the beach as the action was coming fast and furious. hey it's been ages since i saw you last. i think it was at shearwater.

Hi Roj,

i definately have a photo of you. i'll upload once completed along with all of the other photos. they will look better than the ones above. the ones above are oversaturated. i ussualy pick a few of the best images and pump the saturation to see what the colors look like. when editing i tone it down a lot more.

out of all of the photos there are a half a dozen that are really good. the others have little bugs here and there, mainly to do with exposure. it's bee nages since i used the camera so it took me a while to get the settings happening.

i don't think i'll get all of the images finished tonight so probably tomorrow night will be finished.

edit** forgot to answer your question. camera is the canon 40d with 300mm kit lens.

Yes, if you're being picky, the orange looks a bit muddy.

i'll push the yellow channel of the white balance up a notch plus add some luminosity to the orange channel.

might try a little more saturation also. i agree they're not quite popping yet with some of the colours.

no worries oli. it's always a good day at kirra.

i'm still working through the images from saturday. almost finshed the first run then i'll pick the best and go over them further. will definately pm you on seabreeze when they're finished.
