So finally picked up my new 7.8 Mach 5 and 8.6 Overdrive M4 - this will be the final Overdrive made....they apparently will be replaced by a hybrid of the Overdrive and Turbo GT (may be called a Moto?).
Anyway I rigged both on the back lawn yesterday using the recommended settings and they both rigged and looked perfect, so now keen to get them on the water and see how they are....

I don't like the way the Turbos are more race like these days.. or at least after 2020? I got them because they rotated effortlessly. My latest does have better low end grunt and stability but is harder to rig and takes more effort to rotate. It's not as user friendly to gybe or waterstart in chop.
I hope they don't stuff it up and make the Turbos more race like when they hybridise them.

Tried out the 7.8 the other day. I missed a few generations but compared to its Mach 2 counter part it felt very balanced straight out of the bag, no tweaking required.

Only thing i'll change/try is to put it on 28 extension/downhaul on the next rig. Put it on 30 (29 recommended) but had enough space between blocks there that it might get enough downhaul at 28 block to block, which would be better at my stunted height.

If they make them more like the turbo gt I defiantly won't be buying them, hated that sail. I had the 9.2 and after a year of suffering I got the 9.4 overdrive which is just better in every way.
Easier to rig and derig, more low end power, more high end control, faster, lighter, easier.

In the past two weeks I've got out on both my 6.2 and 5.5 Mach Fives. Early impressions are very favourable- but I've long been a fanboy.
Except for summer, my local can be quite blustery, so we rig for the lulls, but expect some heavy gusts. Severne's top-end composure keeps me coming back - it allows a light-weight rider like me to stay planted.
The Mach Five doesn't change any of that: Straight out of the bag these are a very locked in sails. New this year is natively rigging on skinnys - at least for my sizes, but I think 7.0m up still standard diameter masts. Skinnys eases the handling of these race sails, especially carrying them around. Marginally taller aspect/reduced boom stands it all a tad more upright favouring slalom-style sailors. Any change in swing weight through the gybes I haven't noticed.
So yeah, very happy so far, but early days. Can't wait for the seabreezes to arrive, very eager to clock some serious TOW with them.

Do you rig them on SDM or. RDM? A mate here uses the OD on RDM and they are a dream for him and he's a light weight too.
I've got some patrik 3 cam RDM sails coming. They have great rotation. Similar to the OD.

If so, what a pity! ODs are such fantastic sails for all hobby slalom racers, easy to rig, huge windrange, easy to rotate and just so fast! I have them in 6.2/7.0/7.8/8.6. I have the Turbo in 9.2 for low-wind, but the ODs are clearly the better sails. Just used the Turbo yesterday after months and months of using the ODs only, and the wind range and acceleration of the Turbo is half of the ODs.

If Severne wants to consolidate their sail range, just stop the turbo but let the OD untouched.

I made the mistake of buying the turbo 9.2 for light winds to go with my 8.6 and smaller OD,s. After months of hating it I got a 9.4overdrive and it's just better in every way, lighter, more powerful, bigger wind range, easier to use, rotates easier, easier to rig/derig etc etc.
if they do make it the last year then it will be m5's or point 7 next year

ODs are great for speed sailing but not much fun when you drop them in chop and the luff tube fills..I hope they keep both the turbos and ODs.
They both fill a niche.

RDM. It rotates ok but requires more effort. As an old , small female I don't want to have to pop the sail around.
I suppose it's pretty good but you only had to get the earlier model up in the air and it would rotate back and forth depending on the wind. The rotation was good as a no cam .
With this one I have to give it a jerk in lightwinds.
I'm using the 7.5m in patchy 8 - 15kts and the 7m in patchy 12- 18kts so it's not like I'm out in strong wind.

Severne please keep the Overdrives!! Best sail ever for a weekend slalom warrior!!
I dont like the pure slalom sails and dont like the freeride sails like the Turbo!!
I hope they change there mind are i will have look to other brands after being 10 years on ODs

I started windsurfing in 2017 and since last year I settled with the Overdrive's.
For me (75kg) a great sail for long sessions with good speed and the best sound midway gybe when the cambers rotate! 5.5 and 7.0 are the favorites.

Too bad if SV would cancel the OD's, but I guess other brands do except our money too...

Tommy Radis (one of the older sailors here) seems to get around quite quick on it, possibly the quickest i've ever seen him go.

I concur with the majority of everyone's experiences with the Mach, OD's, and Turbo GT

I've had 5.0, 5.5, 6.2, 7.0, 7.8 Mach races, 7.0, 7.8, 8.6 OD's and 7.0, & 8.6 GT's at some point over the years (pie weight 88-90kg)

for me it's about understanding the size and wind strength context. The small M's 5.0, 5.5, 6.2 all fit on RDM's, gone are the big heavy cams. Combined with a light RDM mast and boom, they are very light and easy to handle. The luff pocket is not that big with these sizes. I haven't tried the newer smaller OD's. The over the older R series, i found little difference in handling between the OD's and the Race, hence you might as well have the greater stability of the Race.

For the larger sizes it's a different story. I tried a 8.6 GT and hated it, also a 7.8 M3 and didn't like it that much either. Why? The 8.6GT is a big sail, the bottom end was good and the manoeuvrability was great also, but there was too much compromise at the top end, the overall wind range was quite narrow. The 7.8M3 hand impressive range, but was a bit hard to manoeuvre (and massive luff pocket). I finally ditched them both and got OD's in 7.8 and 8.6, which for me gives me the best of all worlds, stability and manoeuvrability

The 7.0 for me is an interesting size, I can go with any of them M, OD, GT. Currently ive got a M3 and a GT. The 7.0 M3 has the larger cams and is best rigged on a SDM, however at 7.0 it's not too heavy and still quite manoeuvrable. The 7.0 GT is still small enough to rig on a 430 RDM and light weight boom and at 7.0 is still small enough to be reasonably stable at the top end. I like the GT as I use it on my FSW board as well and I don't need to pack SDM stuff (base & boom) when going to the beach. With no big fluff pocket, it's also more robust when you get caught in the shore break.

In summary for me it's getting the context right in the size category, understanding the compromises between, manoeuvrability and stability

For me the replacement for the OD and GT will be about getting this right, a bit like the Gator sail series where the small sizes are like pure wave sails and the larger sizes are like pure free ride sails. I'm sure Severne will be putting some heavy thought and testing into it as it will be a big move merging these two lines

I just recently switched across to severne and am on OD's to try and fix a front foot issue. Since i bought a new 7m 2022 OD a week ago, I've done 30 and then 31 knots in chop without trying, when i previously couldnt get to 26 knots on other brands without having foot issues. Its just my luck if they stop making them now.

HI KJ,
you are spot on. Turbo GT has a good bottom end, but the top end is terrible. I have a Turbo 9.2 and an Overdrive 8.6. And while I get going with the Turbo at 1kn lower wind (10kn) than the OD, anything above 16kn starts to be very difficult to handle. Whereas I can use the Overdrive 8.6 at 20kn with gusts up to 25kn and still handle the power. The wind range is just enormous.

I also have most of the Gators (had 8.0, still have 6.5, 5.5, 4.7, 4.2, 3.7) and true, they change characteristics completely along this range. The thinking behind is obviously that with stronger wind, the water changes from pure freeride more towards wave/b&j conditions, so the sailing style changes and the sail characteristics follows that across the different sizes.

But for a Slalom sail actually I want to have the same characteristics. I don't change my slalom style between 8.6 low wind and 6.2 high wind sails. The only style is just to be fully locked in, full body tension and just fly across the chop.

I really hope the Severne guys change their mind and don't abandon their probably best sail series for weekend speed warriors. I don't want to change brand since I have all the apex pro masts. If Severne really abandons the ODs, I'd probably buy some of the last ODs to have a stock. Especially my 7.0/7.8 OD Mach2 I use heavily, and while they are for sure good for 2-3 more seasons, I know I'll need new ones then.

Curious about your comment "What is a front foot issue? Front foot almost falls out of the footstrap?

Do you find that your front foot on your Fox gets really light when over powered, almost coming out of the footstrap?

Yes, but not particularly on the fox. I'd say sometimes when doing downwind speed runs on the fox or iSonic, I feel as if the front foot would come out of the foot strap.
But it is not consistent, and not related to being overpowered. Probably just a more defensive stance with weight shifted backwards when going above 30kn on choppy conditions. To counteract that, I move my mast hand more forward in order to shift my body weight more forward. At least that helps me.

HI KJ,
you are spot on.

Especially my 7.0/7.8 OD Mach2 I use heavily, and while they are for sure good for 2-3 more seasons, I know I'll need new ones then.

best,
mariachi76

hi M76,

yea i hope they get it right, as i really like my 7.8 & 8.6 OD's and i finally think i've got it right after mucking around and wasting money on the others.

At least that helps me.

best
mariachi76

thanks for replying. I get it more on my 105 fox with the 7.0M3, not so much with the 140 and the 8.6OD. I think its to do with the higher centre of power with the M3, i don't find it such an issue when using a GT or a gator

Yep, front foot comes out of the footstrap at speed which is dangerous.

When i tried your Rocket 105 at SB last year in 20 to 25 knots and in severe chop the only issue i had with it was my right front foot was coming out the strap - only sailing in one direction.

Boards with less boxy walls you have less to push against - possibly. Wave boards and free ride boards have less boxy walls and whenever ive tried them had the same front foot issues.

You can try my 100 litre Speedster next time at SB. No front foot issues but not quite as smooth in the chop as the Rocket but it planes way quicker.

How do you know it will be the last Overdrive?
If so, what a pity! ODs are such fantastic sails for all hobby slalom racers, easy to rig, huge windrange, easy to rotate and just so fast! I have them in 6.2/7.0/7.8/8.6. I have the Turbo in 9.2 for low-wind, but the ODs are clearly the better sails. Just used the Turbo yesterday after months and months of using the ODs only, and the wind range and acceleration of the Turbo is half of the ODs.

If Severne wants to consolidate their sail range, just stop the turbo but let the OD untouched.

nice photo M76, where abouts is that?

That's San Francisco in the background, spot name is Coyote Point. That was a very gusty day, I was on a Fox 105L and OD M3 6.2.

The Overdrive M4 5.5 metre weighs only 4.0 kgs according to the Severne website.

I wonder when we will see the first 8kg rig?

With so little downforce on the mastrack the board should feel a lot more alive.

Ben Severne likes em light.

Do you rig them on SDM or. RDM? A mate here uses the OD on RDM and they are a dream for him and he's a light weight too.
I've got some patrik 3 cam RDM sails coming. They have great rotation. Similar to the OD.

They are also a dream ato DH. No tool required. Really surprised me. Prob not as light as a Severne but build quality is amazing. Some very nice details. I've only used the 6.2&6.8 and both behaved very well as expected.

Nice sails BSN ,any info on these as I can't see anything on the patrik site .

I've also decided on a change from a big name brand and have recently got Loft Switchblades , another 3 cam option

These are proving great on the water , easy to rigg and built to last but not the lightest
Appologies on hijacking this severne thread :)
