Do they still run the "Summer Surf Bus" to the south coast? That could be an answer for the surfing (as opposed to windsurfing) side of it if lack of car is an issue.

First of all:
Yes, I'm a windsurfer! But I also want to start surfing. (I just tried last year in Brazil). In English it's a little bit confusing with the word "surfing" (In German you have two words so you can differentiate it better.) How do you differentiate it? WINDsurfing and surfing ...Difficult

I will need both: windsurfing and surfing stuff. The last is easier to find and buy. So thats not the big problem. But getting the hole equipment for windsurfing...

Of course I'm planning to surf as most as possible, because in Austria - in my homecity Graz I couldn't surf a lot in the last few years (next "good" surfspot is two hours by car and I didn't have one) and now I want to get better and to surf so much until I don't have any more power.
My stuff in Austria consists of F2 style 260 with 109 liters (2004) and JP Freestyle-Wave with 82 liters(2001). But mostly I surfed the bigger one. Now I have sold it, because I want to start with little boards and because I'm not in Austria for 6-12 months.
And sails I have mostly used my Neilpryde Raf Jet with 5,9m² and NP Zone with 5,0m², rarely my NP zone with 4,1m².
I'm thinking over it to take my sails (5,0 and 4,1) and maybe my boom to Australia - but firstly I have to check how much that would cost with Air New Zealand.

My problem will be - how to come to the beaches!? I don't know if I can use my uncles car - I rarely know him at the moment.
Actually I wanted to work in Australia and then it wouldn't be a problem to buy stuff and a car! But because of the difficulties to get a longstay visa and further on a job or working experience I just can visit Australia and New Zealand and look there hopefully for a job through working experiences.

I don't know if it helps you. I'll live in "Klemzig" directly in Adelaide. At this moment I don't have a "feeling" for the size of Adelaide (or Australia). But I have heard and read a few thinks that it should be very big and long distances (Not like in Austria were you can drive through the country in 8 hours by car ). So I hope it is possible to get around in Adelaide in one/two hours?!

Your windsurfing community in Adelaide is closed? Are you meeting together or other things? Because of the unpopularity of windsurfing in Austria we have not really such a community! :-( What a pity!

I'm arriving on 5th of November then I will look for you and further on for surf trips! :-)

Klemzig is a nice central suburb. It is connected via the "O-bahn", which gets you into the city in 10 minutes. From the city, you catch other buses that get you to the beaches. For timetables, study this website:

Don't get a car if you are only staying here three months (save your money).

The closet surfing would be "North Haven". It is about 30 minutes by bus from Klemzig.



It's only small surf (0,3 to 1 metre.. 2 metre in winter), but it's in the city, and would be perfect at your level.

Since you are catching buses, you might like to try Kitesurfing. The metro beaches have perfect conditions for this sport (choppy water), the people who do it are your age (20's), and you can transport your kite stuff via the bus.

You remind me of me when I was 24. I came to Adelaide with no money and toured the southern Australia using coasts and public transport. So I relate to your excitement of discovering a new land :). Good luck, I reckon you are going to have a ball. It's summer time now and Adelaide becomes laid back.

Just remember to carry lots of water with you, as our summers get very hot (+40C) and the hot days can make things very unpleasant if you are not used to it and you have to catch the bus.

Thanks a lot for the informations! So there does exists something like a municipal transport service! I have read that it shouldn't be fully developed and it's better to go by car. (A bicycle should also not be so good. I was used to drive by bike to the university/work. )

My opening line "I'm a 24 years old Austrian girl coming in few weeks to Adelaide" I just used that you know to whom you are talking and to show you that I don't know Australia - so I'm a Newbie and need some informations and of course to get contact to other surfers (that would be great).
The offer from Divaldo I find it great. In addition I would do it in the same way if an Australian comes to my city and asks about windsurfing. There are a few reasons for doing that.
It is more fun to go surfing with someone else and not on my on. You have cultural exchange of course. And also because you have fun on the way to the beach and back and last you can divide fares.

Thanks for your tip "carrying lots of water with me" - at this point I have another question:

shorty or longy? which wetsuit do you use from Nov-Jan and maybe after May?

At the moment I'm just interested in windsurfing/surfing and not kitesurfing. I do a lot of sports and I really have no more time nor money for a new sport. Although kitesurfing would be easier in transportation. If I'm a kitesurfer I would take my own stuff from Austria but windsurfing stuff costs a lot of money to take to AUS. So at the moment I just want to windsurf and surf!

I have looked for surfing stuff in "ebay" but there is rarely stuff! And if.. from QL - to far away to pick up.
At "onboard" there is just new stuff - not possible for me to buy. After 3 months in ADL I'm going to NZ and maybe come back to AUS. So there is no way for new stuff because of lack of money.

Before I buy a car I firstly need surf stuff and to come to SA!

But... in a few days I' ll be in Adelaide! *yahoo*

I first learnt to windsurf in Austria 27 years ago. There are at least 5 windsurf women who are regularly in the sea. Welcome and looking forward to sailing with you (oh and brushing up on my dialekt - Tirolerish aber hoffentlich verstehe Ich Graz dialekt auch! Und die Frau von Dave ist ein sehr nette windsurferin auch, die sind beide sehr gute leute und sehr freundlich. Du kannst auch immer bei uns ubernachten wenn du willst, wir wohnen direkt am strand, gibts wellen zum surfen lernen auch. Wir sind ungefahr 40 minuten von Adelaide mit dem auto.
