I've sailed (windsurfing) the same spot now for 25 years (because I live opposite).
the other day I notice a council (PAEC) errected sign saying council permits now needed for recreational wind harnessing, not restricted to but including kite surfing. Do I now need a council permit to windsurf?.

Hi Phil

This had been brought up before.

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/South-Australia/Start-of-the-seabreezes/

Basically, the council by-laws don't restrict windsurfing, so you can ignore the signs. The only policing at has occurred was at North Haven last year, and this was triggered by some sort of incident between two water users (I don't know the details).

J

PS/ Was I chatting to you last Friday at Largs about 11am ?

there are sections along the coast at holdfast bay that onl;y allow the beachin of craft between certain areas. these include brighton/seacliff yacht club and somerton club.

the big thing is be sensible when its a warm seabreeze arvo.

no spocks or forwards in the shallows and no speed runs.

just be smart and itll be fine....
and on the busy days use a big weed fin so u dont get kids floating in the water caught on your fin.

I lived across the road from a life saving club for 7 years. The beach had no boating signs all over the place and the life saving club patrolled all through the season.

I windsurfed there every sailable day. I had a few club types tell me that windsurfing was not allowed maybe 4 times in the 7 years. I was polite and quiet ... and kept sailing.

The trick is to launch and sail straight out of the no boating zone at low speed then go for it once you get out. Stay out until you've had enough fun then come in the same way. If there's no swimmers you can have at the entire beach provided you don't do anything stupid.

I still pass through those zones (kiting) and have had no problems. That makes almost 20 years of passing through no boating zones.
