The forecast appears to be changing, now reading:

DERWENT ESTUARY, north of Iron Pot:
Mainly southwest to northwest winds 5 to 10 knots for a period in the early
morning. Winds turning south to southeast around the middle of the day then
freshening to 10 to 20 knots in the afternoon.
Winds then easing to 5 to 10
knots during the evening and becoming variable.

I think I'll play it by ear and rig-up from Sandy Bay once the breeze fills-in and then join-in the racing on an impromptu basis.

To those of you that were thinking about it - well you should have. Yes drifted out to the start line, start delayed for a bit, south easterly came in, fully powered up, perfect Formula weather. Sailed 4 races back to back. Then back to BYC where it was all action, hundreds of people on the boulevard, jazz festival, food stalls, prizes for every man and his dog, a fantastic day. Only 5 boards, 2 young guys on Bic 293s and Fitz, James and myself. Certainly an event that should be put on our calendar for next year. Nice work on the screen prints Kazza.

Well done guys, glad you got some wind. Should talk about this event at the AGM. Maybe this could be a 5th round for the state championships. Then we could look at another slalom round to even things up (6th round on the East coast).
Just trying to come up with some new ideas.

Well they say "you gotta be in it to win it" and you guys won out this time with a good wind, competition and entertainment at the end .
The rest of us ended in the lagoon with very little wind and not much entertainment.......shame

Well done Kazza for organinsing pushing this one, looks like they'll be a few in it next year

Sounds like it was perfect in the end. I had a look via the Wrest Point Casino web cam at around 1:30pm and could see the action - looked great!

Be good to look at including this event in the state titles next year ...

Dave & Steve ... boys , where were you ?

You & all those others who relied on the weather forecast missed out on some great sailing on the Sunday .

It was very light as I ghosted to the start area with my 10.4 gaastra .
Then , as only the Derwent can do , a black line appeared from the south and a pickup boat told me it was about to blow 20 knots .

A quick dash to the sandstone rock shelf off Bellerive , a change down to my trusty senior cits cruiser weight 9m & back to the start line for race 2 .

meanwhile , that other old codger , Stew Gordon had powered ( 9.8 m )around the course the take the siren from a couple of teenagers in conditions perfect for him .

Stew did the same in the next 3 races to pick up 4 rash vests ( he gave me one after I put him in a half nelson ). He also picked up bags & a hat ( he gave me that too out of pity ) - enough for him to cover xmas pressies for his family .

The teenagers ( Dave & Steve reincarnated ) did enough in the drifter stuff of Sat on their YA raceboards ( remember centreboards ) to finish 2nd & 3rd overall .

A big event , lots of people , music ,food & beer & bundy/cokes in the sunshine at Bellerive YC before & at the presentation .

Well worth doing next year .

ps Karen - a very nice screen print job on those rash vests - it must be the gold as Jenny grabbed it for herself when I got home !

pps - it didnt end up blowing 20 knots .. more like 10 - 13 , ideal for everyone to get aroung the course & do 4 races comfortably ( ? )
