could really anything match the hybrid in strong winds? I can't see a single skin really being able to match the comfort and performance of an hybrid well powered.... I just can't

Yeah I think you’re right. In a recent podcast ( up on foil) Aljaz Valic 777 designer said that there are limitations in the physics of a single skin airfoil. Coming from a kitiing background I have ridden 5m kites kite foiling in 30 knots and been totally comfortable but with a parawing a 4.2m barely holds up above 25knots. When I got a good session on the pt hybrid ( thanls sheps) that was the closest I have felt to the easy, smooth, fast upwind that I felt kite foiling.

What is the low down grunt like to get going?

sorry for hijack

I can get the 4.3 going in 14-15 kts but I actually use it over 17-18 because I prefer being a touch overpowered with the 5.4 in 15 kts

Yeah I agree that hybrids and or better double skins are the way. It became crystal clear for me over the last two sessions. The first I was on the Paia and it was absurd how comfortable the 3.1m was in 40 knots. The only issue was honestly that the packdown size on anything bigger than that tends to get silly.

Yesterday I was back on the 2.4m pt skin while my buddy was on his 3.1m hybrid. I was very focused on controlling it two handed the whole session and got jerked off once or twice in gusts. He, on the other hand, was riding one handed upwind completely relaxed the entire time.

IMO any low end losses are 100% negated by the strong wind management right away. My LTX quiver ships tomorrow and I hope the 2.4 and 3.1 cover me for 99% of my normal sessions. I picked up a 1.9m PRv1 to see if that is a contender for single skin smoke on the water days and to have in the Gear Library. After that though, I don't intend to spend anymore money on single skin tech for the smaller sizes.

Had another super nice session in gusty winds on the PT Hybrid 3.1 early this week. Totally feel they are unmatched. Super keen to hear how you enjoy the LTX. I bought a PRV2 5m for super light wind. I have to say it has amazing stability and low end, but after riding hybrids all winter I hated the feel of the bar. So heavy and my hand was squeezed right to the end of the bar. If I put two hands there, one on top of the other I could depower it ok but all the load had shifted off the harness line and onto my arms. This is far from ideal when needing to edge to keep control. The bar just kept wanting to go back to a single position. On the hybrids you just set the bar angle and it stays in that position. I’m thinking an LTX in a large size now. Have to say that the Ozone was amazing at pumping up on though and in summer when super hot this wing will get me up in nothing.

Hijack, sorry. BWalnut and Sheps, any comments on 3.1 Paia with small foils? Currently using a 1.9m frigate on the big days (30 knots and up), and on the UHA 570 at 82kg. The little frigate is super stable up to 40 knots but slow upwind. In these conditions I travel downwind very quickly so looking to improve that up/down ratio. Just concerned how well the Paia would get the little foil to take off.

Cheap Paia or wait for reviews on Flysurfer Zap and PPC Orbit?

I've used the 3.1 Paia in 40 knots at 86kg with the Code 720s and it was super fun. The Paia is a unique challenge to use though, so you need to be prepared for that. I don't know anything about the zap but the Orbit is extremely interesting to me. The ability to increase a double skins low end to start and then switch to upwind race mode looks epic.

Thanks for the instant response!
What would be your low end on the 720s with the Paia? And what board? (I’m on a 6’11” x 18” with lots of rocker so it gets up pretty easily.)
I’ve researched the handling challenges of the Paia and I think I’d be fine with it, but if the new gen of twin skins makes it instantly obsolete…

The big days are my favourite and happily we get plenty of them in Melbourne.

Well.... in my experience the takeoff low end and magic low end are very different. I was able to get that 3.1 going in 27 knots but the upwind angles and speed were poor. I honestly haven't had enough sessions to really sort it out. What I can say is that I was flying upwind in 40 knots, one handed, unhooked, like it was a walk in the park. I wish I could tell you I had a deeper knowledge of the Paia and it's nuances but I just haven't had enough days to really nail it down. I was on either a 68l 6'5" or 77l 5'11" when using it. I think it's worth trying if you are willing to struggle through the relaunch learning process but am clueless on if the next gen double skins are significantly better, or just slightly tweaked.

There's a lot of support for the 777 hybrid though, I've pushed the 3.1 to 45 knots and it was uncomfortable but still doable. I think they just raced them recently and did quite well. That is very easy to use in comparison.

I have the PR2 in 3.6 and 2.4 as well as a 3m and 4.3 PowerPack. LOVE the 3.6 for all of the reasons already described, and it's my favourite wing in the quiver. The 2.4 PR2 feels great too, but not quite as steady and secure as the 3.6 PR2. It is more demanding to fly and gets pretty busy (not unstable, just busy) in the top end of its range, making it a little more physical to fly. The behaviour of the parawing doing quick sine-movements in gusts can be managed, but once it hits its limit, this behaviour gets a little annoying and can rip you off the board suddenly on rare occasions. But this is not at all a deal breaker for me. Still goes upwind great, is fast, and very reactive (sometimes too much so when OP'd). I'd like to see a little more calmness out of the 2.4 PR2 in the upper end due to the bigger gusts you encounter flying such a small para. Packdown is still excellent and I really enjoyed some absolutely epic days in the Eastern Gorge on it recently. I could have been on a 1.9 easily some days.

At 93 kg on a KT Halo 800 foil and 2.4 PR2, I'd say top end is gusting about 40 knots. 35 is more comfortable. I noticed my much lighter friend on a V1 PR 2.4 was handling a similar range if not a little higher without too many complaints. I've not ridden V1/2 back to back.

Ok, one month in with the PR V2 and I can confirm the same problems in the 2.4m . Exactly the same as described here, studently going up on gust over 35 knt. I contact the dealer and I'm waiting for warranty to contact me.
It is interesting that the all other sizes that I have ( 3,6m and above ) work amazing, definitely the best parawing I tried.

Now, my question, did anybody tried to make the lines longer to temper those nerves? I have a similar issue with the kanaha 2,5 m ( not that bad), and all videos in showing short lines show clearly more nervous behavior. Will it not make sense to give some extra line to the smaller sizes?

Sorry you're dealing with that. I never got a response from Ozone and see the v2 2.4 getting dumped as low as $700 already. Hopefully your dealer can pull something off for you.

For reference:
My 3.1m LTX has 120cm lines and no stability issues (vs the 119cm lines on the PRv2 2.4).
My 2.4m LTX has shockingly short 104cm lines and no stability issues either.

It’s the 3m as well.
In the v1 the 2.4 is a lovely thing and I still have it.

you have to wonder who tested these things.

what I can add for those that are trying to content with the 3m and maybe it applies to the 2.4m is that back line pressure makes it more hostile. They can fly settled if the back line pressure is just enough to stop the fluttering. Counter intuitive to me but seems to work.
