I put a 9.8 on the back of my 22ft Space Sailer - which is way overpowered, but it was all I could find on the 2nd hand market when I needed to buy, and the extra horse power does give some confidence when passing under the bridges in Freo against the rush of the tide. The only time I get any cavitation is when I have to ride over the steep bow wave from a passing stink boat.

The engine is around 40kg, so I had to upgrade my bracket to something that could handle the extra weight. The Tenob one did the trick. I also had to cast an angled pad out of epoxy for the transom so that the mount fitted on level. I used a large tupperware box for the mold and propped it at the correct angle while the epoxy set to the right level.

Even with the heavy duty springs in the mount it's a bit of a pain in the... back to reach through the pushpit and lift the 40kg engine up out of the water, and then tilt it so that it stays clear when healed. It's also noisy and smelly.

My next boat will have an inboard! (and I'll probably learn to despise that too ;-) )

Toph is right - moorings are hard to come by. They can no longer be transferred between individuals - so when someone sells a boat they have to hand the mooring back to the govt, who will then assign it to the next person on the waiting list. You will need to contact DoT to get your name on the list and pay the waiting list fee - if you want to get a mooring via the proper channels.

You could try approaching some of the yacht clubs - they often have moorings that are under their own control and might be more readily available. However, you'll need to be a member of the club and that will add to the cost.

It's a modified Frances 26, built by a shipwright in Queensland in 1992 before being moved to WA. I'm trying to track down the original owner/builder, but all I have is the surname 'Peterson' who moved from Queensland to WA and lectured in boat building at Fremantle TAFE in the early 2000s. The story is that he used this boat as a training bed and got the students to help out with the refit and redeck around 2003.

If anyone recognises the boat or knows any other info that would be helpful.
