Hi
I’m getting a new sup board for surfing this summer and wondered what the latest best rail tape is currently ?

I usually buy ION as it is super strong. Costs about $60 to $80 for XL. so not cheap but good.

I still got lots of paddle chips close to the nose however. I was surprised how far forward some of the chips are…..

I could have put the tape closer to nose obviously but looked weird and the tape gets far to wide on the thinner nose rails. So obviously designed to not go to close to the nose. Perhaps I must just cut the first 500mm way thinner and bring it way forward.

I don’t recon the back of the board needs much protection. Side rails just need protection for when board goes on its side.

Any comments or ideas on new rail tape on market ? Any of them designed to go closer to nose ?

Hey London I think we all missed the point of your post. You were actually asking about thin rail tape that would protect the rail section close to the nose. I had a look in our local "Standup Surf Shop" in Fremantle and the thinnest is the 50 mm 3M standupsurfshop.com.au/product/3m-sup-rail-tape/ may still need a little trimming.

If you are jumping down from a 10'6 x 32 170L board to a more surf SUP shape I would not recommend going too small too soon. I would pick up a 2nd hand 140 -150 ltr board 9 ft ish by 31 / 32" . If you settle into it quickly you can always move it on and drop down a few liters. Board like the JP surf wide, Starboard widepoints, Sunovas and Smik's Twin all are great and offer something in that size which you should be able to find 2nd hand locally.

Been using the 3M tape for years and you can't go wrong. Cheap (ish) and easy to apply. And unlike Gong products available globally and probably from your local surf / SUP ship in SA.

Hey SoCal have you had it on the scales yet ? Be interesting to see what they are coming out at. My Infinity 8:5 twin was 6.3 kg without fins, super light
