Jules,
what would be your plan if the temperature alarm or the smoke detector started going off?
Mike

That's rather like saying what is the plan if lightning strikes your house.
To answer the question however I wouldn't be trying to put it out that's for sure. I would be getting the hell off the boat after putting in a mayday if I could do so without inhaling smoke.
In my opinion and in my experience metho, kero or gas stoves on a boat are far far more dangerous.

Why do you include metho? Since it is miscible with water, you can immediately extinguish a kero stove fire with water, or your cup of coffe, or wine or beer.

Yes, my understanding is it's about 1 cm per hectoPascal.

Fabulous Phil is a convert to your cause. He'll probably chime in, but if not send him a PM.

A decent smart alternator regulator is worth considering if you're very dependent on engine charging. Standard reg's will take forever to top up the last 10% or so.

+1 for JonE's comments. Even reasonably decent Tophats go very cheaply. Hold your horses and look around.

Quixotis is on the money - such systems could be useful in looking for a spot to anchor, where you're just creeping along.
I suggest the OP google "ORCV's Beyond the
Bay" training program.
