Done this a few times with snapped masts definitely beats shelling out for factory extenders.
Just make sure you’ve got a good amount of overlap inside so you don't get a nasty stress point right above the join when it's fully loaded on downhaul. A layer of heat shrink or good quality tape over the collar also helps keep grit from jamming the extension inside after a session.

The America's Cup without drama wouldn't be the America's Cup.
Going all-electric and ditching the cyclors/grinders definitely feels like another step away from pure traditional sailing, but from an engineering standpoint, freeing up crew weight for better aero and flight control makes total sense.
The driver shuffle is the wildest part, though. Seeing Pete Burling in Luna Rossa gear is going to take some serious getting used to, but Nathan Outteridge taking the lead helm on ETNZ keeps things plenty interesting from an Aussie perspective.
