Last weekend, the biggest storm of the autumn so far gave us wind in excess of 50 knots. With the van packed full of gear and prepared for anything, the only question was whether to stay in Dublin for wavesailing, head to Bunbeg for speed (where it would probably be too windy), or take a chance on Dungarvan - which usually doesn’t get so much wind as forecast. In the end Dungarvan was the choice, and it turned out the windiest we have ever sailed it, since my very first time on this course almost 20 years ago. Towards the end of the day it was blowing in excess of 55 knots. Unfortunately, the wind angle was not perfect for mega speed, being completely square to the beach, which meant max speeds were only just under 45 knots. But I’m still delighted to finally get some decent wind in Dungarvan, and after so many trips to Luderitz, feel totally comfortable in these conditions. Next time with a better angle, I’m sure 50knots is possible to achieve in Ireland for certain! Great to have a few friends on the water too!
