Whether your ambition is to be the best racing sailor that ever graced a foredeck, or the safest ocean cruiser with the best seamanship skills in the world, you need to know your theory, and that's where the online Aztec Sailing Theory courses come in.

Whether you are a novice and taking a shore-based course, or merely want to fill in the holes in your knowledge, these simple-to-read courses are an excellent private study method, in your own time, when you have time. They can either complement, or substitute, for learning with an instructor.

Bill Johnson, who wrote the courses, even gives you his email address in case you have questions.

The courses cover the knowledge every sailor needs to venture safely away from the dock - navigation, tides, charts and navigational aids., the COLREGS (International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea) and, last but not least, the weather.

The course is FREE, but if you're happy with the courses, Bill allows you an 'Honesty Box' to express your appreciation. If you don't like learning online, you can download a printable version for a pittance of a fee, payable by credit card.

The best thing is that the courses cover ALL the theory you need for The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore. The courses have a natty way of changing colour according to the which qualification you are going for, so that if you are merely trying for Day Skipper, but would like more comprehensive knowledge, it's right there. If you find it a bit difficult, just skip it and go back to your own colour.

Even if you don't want to attain any of these particular qualifications, every sailor should have the appropriate knowledge, and isn't this a great way to check that you're up to speed!?

There are even questions at the end of each chapter to test your own knowledge.

Bill makes it clear that the site does not cover practical application of the theory, or skills that are taught and learned on the practical courses. 'Sailing and seamanship require practical skills that can only be properly learned once you are on a boat,' he says. 'The best way to learn about ropework, boat handling or how and when to use the different navigational techniques, is to do it for real.'
