While India has never had much leisure sailing apart from the sail training within its Navy, Kochi, that pleasant harbour city on the rich southwest coast, is becoming more and more sailing conscious.

Long been a haven for cruising sailors, Kochi became more conscious of the sport last year when the round world Volvo yachts chose the city as a stopover point. Now Kochi is teaching its children to sail...

A three-month long yachting training programme for boys and girls was inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for Sports Pratik Patil in Kochi on Monday this week.

About 52 youngsters, including the girls, are attending the training programme, while the target was to coach about 250 sailors in three months, Kerala Yachting Association officials said.

In his brief speech, Patil assured all possible assistance for the ongoing training programme, which is related to the 34th National Games to be held in Kochi next month.
