What sailors want for Christmas...

'What are they asking Santa for?' .

American sailors, like other Americans, are very good at counting things, and hence the country comes up with many more statistics than your average sailing nation.

But BoatU.S. this week takes the prize, with their announcement that, according to a recent survey of members, 5.5% of them want new front teeth for Christmas.

In a multiple-choice opinion poll of the association's more than half-million power and sailboat-owning members asking for their Christmas gift wishes, just 5.5% said they wanted new front teeth. 'Clearly, there are more important things to boaters,' said BoatU.S. spokesman Scott Croft.

So what do they want?

First Choice: A new Global Positioning System (GPS) - 22% of all votes
Second Choice: A new boat
Third Choice: Foul weather gear

Additionally, a remarkable 36% admitted they had been bad and would expect nothing from Santa this year.

'From this data we can assume that 'good' boaters don't like being lost, and also enjoy being aboard shiny new boats in the rain,' added Croft.

However, just when we were getting excited about these results, and ready to rush to the nearest marine store to buy said Christmas presents for our favourite sailor, BoatU.S. advised that 'the poll's methodology is completely unscientific and has a margin of error of + or - 100%.

O well, back to the drawing board...
