Driver killed in powerboat race - Taree

One of Australia's best known power boat racers has been killed while participating in the annual Taree Aquatic Power Boat Club's Easter Classic powerboat race yesterday afternoon.

About 5pm, a 61-year-old Tamworth man,Brian McCosker was racing in the high performance Blown Alcohol Division around a circuit on the Manning River at Taree when his boat Liberty flipped and landed upside down on the western end of the circuit.

Divers on the course went to the drivers aid finding McCosker face down in the water seconds later.

They retrieved him from the water and immediately commenced CPR before he was taken to shore and rushed to Manning Base Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased.

Police from Manning/Great Lakes Local Area Command were called to the river and commenced investigations into the matter including the seizure of the powerboat for mechanical examinations.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
