New angler access on Great Ocean Road, Victoria

'Steps at Point Sturt and Grey River' Department of Primary Industries VIC

Recreational anglers are enjoying safer and more convenient access to two popular fishing spots along the Great Ocean Road, thanks to the installation of steps at Point Sturt and Grey River.

The 30 steps at each site have been constructed by the Association of Geelong and District Angling Club with $80,000 of funding from the annual Recreational Fishing Grants Program.

Located on the Great Ocean Road at Point Sturt, 500 metres west of Wye River and at Grey River, 3.5 kilometres west of Kennett River, both spots are well-visited by anglers keen on catching salmon, snapper, whiting and trevally. The steps feature a slip resistant finish, have been cut from locally quarried bluestone and have hand rails on the outside of the cliff face.

The steps are another great example of how revenue from the sale of recreational fishing licences is being used to improve fishing opportunities in Victoria. Since its inception in 2001, the annual Recreational Fishing Grants Program has funded more than 240 projects throughout Victoria, worth more than $8.5 million.
