NSW Maritime reports that almost 6000 flares have been deposited since a new partnership for their safe disposal began in March. Early indications were that boaters had got the message and were responding enthusiastically to safely dispose of flares and keep them out of landfill. A total of 5574 flares had been dropped off in the first six months of the statewide flare disposal trial. Flares are an important part of the essential emergency signalling equipment needed on a boat. Every boat heading out to open seas must carry a minimum of two red hand flares (for night or day ...
