Just about every website I look at has twiter. I have noticed that these same websites don't update news, events regularly. They tend to use twiter for updates, etc.
I always thought twiter was for people like Lara Bingle who have lunch at Hugos Manly and post "Just having lunch at Hugo's Manly" like wgaf.
Does anybody rate twitter ?

Not when I see stuff in the newspaper like I did a year or so ago.
A massive earthquake destroyed half a city and many died. The press immediately search Twitter and come up with some young actress who said "OMG the whole place, like, just shook"

FFS

I thought Facebook was bad enough, but when we are so interested in the minute by minute updates of some other person's banal existence, or media values the Tweeting of some borderline retarded 18 y/o blonde over the stories of the truly affected, society has gone to sh!t.

Yep, have it on my iPhone. Follow some pro surfers and other people of interest. I even got a retweet from Slater. Its actually pretty interesting some of the tweets & pics etc they put up. And good for travelling, you can look back where you were & what you did etc.

(as if anyone in the world except for me gives a sh!t)

Anyone else want to post what they are doing that nobody else gives a sh!t about?

I think participation in a forum that caters to one's hobby - no it is more than that, lifestyle - is easily understandable.

Thinking that anyone cares about Tweets like "just got to work and traffic was bad" is fkn sad.
Media making front page news out of a bimbo with an I.Q smaller than her bust size saying "OMG whole place just, like, shook" is more sad.
Assuming people know you had a baby, got engaged or somebody died, because you put it on Facebook, is a really sad indictment upon the changes social media has imparted. What happened to real interpersonal relationships?

Ever noticed the Facebook pics of pretty girls in the paper, if they have been involved in a fatal car crash or murdered etc? Social networking enables media to make things more "ooohhh" and "ahhhh" so they love it, and it is leading to even less balanced reporting than we had previously (never thought it possible...). They get the story, then look for social media stuff to boost it up and print it. If an ugly person dies it isn't news anymore?

Its sad your so negative. I use Facebook to keep contact with family & friends around Australia & the world. Works like a charm as its impossible to keep contact with so many people as much as you'd like too. As with Twitter it is what you make it, if you wanna follow idiots good luck to you. Problem is today a large percentage of the population still don't understand technology, i see it on a daily basis doing my job. Hence people being so negative when it comes to a lot of technology etc. Learn to use it properly and you'll enjoy it!!!!

^^^ I appreciate your sentiment, but don't think I am being negative - just realistic.
Social media was developed to assist in academics sharing ideas and much like the internet in general it has become rapidly taken up by all and sundry, leading to social problems nobody could foresee.

With FB and Twitter we don't see the major dramas quite yet but they are contributing to some social ills or the loss of interpersonal connections - much like the ability to SMS has.
