Reading the Pool pump thread makes me wonder what people have tried to fix/repair/replace based solely on the advice found on forums, Google and youtube, things normally beyond your own skills and experience?

For me, I recently bought a replacement vacuum motor off EBay and fitted it with the help of YouTube, likewise a new battery in my electric toothbrush (thats a fiddly soldering job!), and on the way courtesy of Ebay are parts to fix a fault in my washing machine. So far I'll save at least a $1000 in replacements or service call-out fees.

Ha ha, I've had access to the net since iinet had a few hundred customers and was run from Michael Malone's parents garage in Padbury. But it does seem that the quality of the content for DIY has improved significantly over the last few years, or Googles profile on me has got enough data that it can target search very effectively....

Can't say about fixing things, but the turn by turn feature on google maps saved my arse in Melbourne this week.
Had to navigate the west gate bridge in peak hour, wouldn't have had a clue without it

Well then I hope you've contributed your fair share.
I haven't done too many videos, but I've released a number of open source projects and guides in my field.
