I have broken my wrist

It's an "undisplaced fracture of the distal radius" which basically means the end of my radius is fractured but the pieces of bone are relatively in place.

I've got a cast that stops me moving my wrist too much

(similar to this)
/images/misc/forum-image-missing.gif

but I'm not sure how much I should do with the bits of my hand & arm that are outside the cast. It's not sore at all but I really don't want to prolong my healing period as it's already going to be 4 weeks.

Anyone got any experience with this? Should I even be typing????

It's still in hospital. The Drs aren't sure if it's gonna make it

It will need a visor transplant at the least. Waiting for a donor...

My take.
Rest it as much as you can, wiggle your fingers periodically to help blood flow and reduce pins n needles type thing.

When the cast comes off take advice from a physio. Get an appointment with a good one and they will help to strengthen it again.

Don't think though that when the cast comes off its time for forwards backwards and downhill biking. Better to increase strength slowly with the said physio.

Happy healing.

Thanks PR, that's the info I was looking for. Spewing it's gonna be more time after the cast comes off before I can get back into things.

I do actually want to be able to use my arm this summer!

hey leech, i got too cocky in shallow water and broke my wrist at the radius earlier this year. i had a cast for 6 weeks then saw a physio who put me on to strengthening exercises. i found one of the best things to regain grip strength is to buy a squash ball and squeeze it for as long and often as you can stand.
i insisted on a plastic (not fibreglass) cast, they fit your arm better, you can remove them easily to wash, and best of all you can still get in the ocean for some rehab.
i was lucky to break mine at the end of the windy season; i suggest you stay off the forums and away from the forecasts in case it blows while you are out of action.
also eat plenty of protein, calcium, and stay off the grog to improve healing time
good luck mate

I also asked for the removable type but I don't think the Dr trusted me to keep it on

As for cleaning, it's starting to get a bit on the nose!

How long's this rehab gonna take?

go to an orthotist and get a plastic cast made. it cost me about $100 but it was worth every cent; the cast she made was far more comfortable and effective than the one the doctor did, and it reduced the pain straight away compared to the dodgy plaster one.

the rehab will take as long as it takes; you'll know when its right to go. i have had a few fractures on the past and always ignored all the advice and jumped back into sports, which only prolonged the healing and also, in the case of my ankle and bones in my hand, they never really healed properly and still give me problems years later.
this time with my broken wrist i learnt to give it time to heal properly.
dont push it.

I broke my scaphoid about 2 years and got a plastic cast. Seriously, get one! No smells, comfortable and if you're inclined, you can get any colour you want. It also means that if you do it again, you've already got a cast!

Also after the cast is removed, see an occupational therapist. You'll have limited movement of your wrist once it comes off...joint seisure, muscle degradation etc. It is the different between having 95-100% of your original movement back and not being able to sail/kite/push up on your surfboard. They'll also give you strapping instructions as you still won't be 100% for a few months. Even if you don't get a plastic cast (which you'll get an occupational therapy practise anyway), go see a OT a few times during and after. Well worth the time, money and effort.

My mate didn't do it when he broke his wrist and now he has to push up on his surfboard with a fist instead of a hand.

Just think...at least it didn't happen in the middle of summer.

Leech, sorry to hear about your accident. After multiple injuries (including some very nast back injuries) and time off the water i had to give up downhilling/dirtjumping and street riding. I did try to get into XCing but couldn't stop myself jumping off things. So it looks like no MTBing for me again... Shame, because i still think adrenaline wise, it's the best sport i've ever done. Especially flying down a WC downhill course in the french alps!!

Not that any of that helps your predicament.

My mates and I are only new to MTB and we've come a long way very fast due to a lot of peer pressure, madness and blindness to the risks.

It's been so much fun but this injury has certainly made me re-think my approach to downhill/freeriding! You can't just go for it like you do in windsurfing. The penalty for error is much higher when it's dirt underneath you instead of water!

I'll definitely be getting back into it but I might wait til after the windsurfing season

I think I'm gonna spend some time getting my smaller jumps dialled first and stay clear of poorly designed northshore constructions!

I've seen vids of the French Alps stuff, Crash, and it's mind blowing.

The "fibreglass" one is pretty comfy and I got water-repelling wadding in it so I'll give it a wash eventually.

Thanks for the advice, I would definitely have had the tendency to push it too hard too early. Doesn't sound worth it tho!

OT sounds like a good idea. Do I need a referral from the GP to see one?

Can't remember to be honest...best bet is to ring your local GP and find out. I'll see if I have any info on it at home.

Also, if you have private health insurance, you'll get some money back.

Bad luck mate,

Only bit of info I can offer is stay off the p*ss as alcohol inhibits your osteoclasts which are the little bone making cell things.
You can lose quite a high % bone re-growth if you're continually on the beer while your body is trying to repair bones.

Apparently it's good to use a squashball as mentioned earlier but don't lift heavy stuff with it. Best see a physio really!

BTW 4 weeks !!! you lucky bastard!

Mate dont do more than you should!
I crashed racing motocross about 7 weeks ago abd broke my shoulder... Doc said leave it in the sling for about 3 weeks and stay off the bike and windsurfing for 5 weeks, i left it almost 4 when we got a huge swell and 30 knots! i couldent help myself and had a great sail! the shoulder didnt even bother me at all after i taped the hell out of it!
unfortunatly i broke it again and made it alot worse than i had in the first place! now i am sitting out for another 6 weeks watching the wind! fingers crossed for no plates and screws!!
