if you go a little further up to East Gippsland 6 hrs approx a place called Marlo at the mouth of the Snowy River, near Orbost, fits all the description but add ideal for wind and kiteing on the wide river or surf up at Cape Conran, beaches are amazing, beautiful environment and no one knows about it, also has an original old pub with great counter meals and magic views, sort of like stepping back in time

A bit further away, but also in Gipsland

Go to Buchan.

There are some springs there, caves and those 1930's swimming pools set up for tourists that don't really go there to often anymore. A tiny old world town with a river running through it set in an idealic valley. Went there ages ago. Would love to spend more time there.

Other than that, I'd say Bear Creek near Walkerville - very remote, very beautiful about 3 hours from Melbourne on the coast looking over Wilsons Prom - no river, but good rock fishing.

Lure - Ondex spinner knockoff I spotted in a tackle shop a couple of years back, I bought 5 as I haven't seen them in about 20years.

(Not sure if they make the original Ondex's, but my brother & I used to catch all our reddies as kids with them. Used to ride our pushies to the local spillway when the water was down & search for the snagged ones in the chickenwire.)

The gear was an (unwanted) kmart combo my parents gave me years ago, not bad, but no good for saltwater which most of my gear is used for. Also, as with most things, when you get into a certain sport, you get fussy, but it's good enough to leave in an old dairy shed for years at a time.

If you're going to Rocklands, they're biting on soft plastics apparently...and biting hard. My almanac tells me that fishing over xmas is supposed to be great, so hoping for a few good sesh's also.

Really would be good to have a fishing forum on here again...but I'm not game to ask!

K dog look up sheepyard flat just outside mansfield and 3 hours from melbourn CBD it has the howqua river running through it with prolific young brown and rainbow trout . the howqua ends up running into lake Eildon that also has trout and redfin.

the best place for fishing and a great place for kids is the breakaway twin rivers caravan park Alexandra, the park is 5min out from Alexandra thats only 2 hours from city CBD nice warm country feel and 4 great pubs the caravan park has great tent sites right on the goulburn river IMO the best trout spot and river in vic.
even if you dont stay its a great day trip
