Find this mainstream article too difficult to believe, especially the comments.

By law in the U.K,you must have minimum 3rd party insurance.Premiums are often many times cost of car, can't be can it!

Is this another means of getting us off the road?

Its not a means to get us off the road... but it is a bit rediculous.

When I was looking at cars to buy when we were over there in 2000 (I was 28), we were quoted £5000(roughly $14000) just for CTP insurance on a £800 crappy old 2L Ford Sierra (no, not the cosworth).
When I ask why, the woman said that 2L was a "very powerful engine" - I told her that the last car I had insured in Oz was a worked 5L V8 ($750/£270 to insure fully comp as a 20yo) and a CBR900RR motorbike ($900/£320 to insure fully comp).

Ended up a with a £400 Red Rover 214 still paying £600 to insure the POS

By the time we left in 2008 I was paying about £800 fully comp for a 1999 Saab 95 Aero.

The third-party insurance ain't to cover the cost of your old, rundown bomb...It's to cover the other poor motorists, pedestrians and property that get damaged/injured/destroyed when the brakes on your old bomb don't stap ya fast enough, or the handling ain't quite up to the corner, or the young boy-racer (who can only afford the cheap old bomb) is tryin' to impress his mates.

Also, don't take anything(!) the Daily Mail says at face value...The worst kind of right-wing mock outrage tabloid reporting.

And, for that old bomb, I reckon the insurance is only half the story compared to the amounts you'll be paying to pass the annual roadworthy testing ("MOT").

And the first thing that this new young driver will do with this newly insured car will be to blow all the road speed limits to proof the he the fastest driver around even that nobody around really care or challenge him....
For me seeing P plate on the road turn on all my alarms bells to keep distance as much as possible and prepare for all unforeseeable maneuvers ...

It just simple statistics working against young drivers.. that is all..and insurance as a business simply reflect this.
Cheap cars even works against them as I believe if they do drive expensive Mercedes on third party that could be the best lesson to pay for them self for all scratches and bumps.

OK I have perfect solution ! For insurance company and willing young driver to install GSP tracking and recording device. All records from one year presented to insurance company , then verified against Google map with speed limits.
When 100% compliant - then young driver deserve the lowest rate available, when not - then pay for all recorded speed infrigements !!
Easy and fair , don't you think ?
That only regarding obvious speed infringements,
What about danger overtaking, line changing, red and yellow light running, tailgating that is mostly domain of that young or never grow up drivers?

www.suncorp.com.au/insurance/ctp/quote.html?source=getQuote

$320 for 12 months CTP.

...I'm going to get into an angry rage trance anyway.

This is definitely another means of getting us off the road and enslaving us to public transport, probably public transport with chem trails coming out of the air-conditioning [insert link to youtube video]. Even though this is in the UK expect to see it here soon, as the Queen is the head of an international drug cartel that controls the UN and the World Bank.

This is a great system, and I am sure there are many young drivers and bystanders alive today because of it.

V8s are totally unnesasary for 17 year olds. There is no justification for such a machine.

In fact it like allowing a new kite surfer who has just finished there lessons and given them a 17 m kite in 30 knot winds.

I love great machines and v8s have a place as well as other tuned performance cars.

All in making certain cars unreachable by inflated insurance premiums would almost single handedly stop hooning.
A bit embarrassing trying to do donuts in 1litre front wheel drive micra/starlet/barina.

Ps I saved for a 1.6litre fiesta xr2i 4 cylinder when I was 17 it cost 3000 pounds it was a few years old. I was insured on my parents policy which cost me an extra 2000 a year.

This cover was there for a couple of weeks. They did not issue a full certificate. When we followed up. They changed the premium to 17000 pounds per year.

I was very upset had to sell the car.
However looking back it was probably a good thing.

There is difference in attitude ..
When I am on the road for windsurfing fun doesn't start unless I reach beach and jump on the board..
For P rider fun starts already after leaving the garage.,
Each light stop is like waterstart, try to avoid or start as fast as possible
each road corner like gibing - just a guessing if tyre still grips at full speed or you land on the side
surfing and texting don't mix well in the water but on the road is the only time you have one hand free
overtaking on the water needs some skills and right equipment on the road even monkey could push the pedal to the metal
and pedestrian and bikers are easier to scary off the road then moored yachts and running speed boats.
