" but probably not as much as the companies that make them plus we pick up the tab on the health costs ,so we'd rather that we make you sick just looking at the packet and hopefully deter you "
(personally I reckon the ol hook through the lip ad was the best or maybe a new take on the grim reaper aids ad with the ol reaper bowling over the poor ol victims of smoking)

(as an aside I am intrigued that if the tobacco companies keep questioning whether the new packaging will deter smoking they fight so hard to keep the status quo)

I say let the companies brand the crap out of them - who cares.

Banning smoking in pubs, clubs, resturant, and all public areas (parks, beaches, ect) would go alot further, if Canada Ireland and a host of others can do it so can Aus.

Lovely quote from QI last night.
A girl on the panel said she'd only do advertising if it was for cigarettes.
"It's bloody fantastic, and it might not give you cancer!"

We do! Welcome to the modern south Australia!

We even banned it in rundle mall, jetty road, any undercover bus stops, hospital grounds and the list keeps growing!

Now you have to go to a location away from everyone else to suck a fat one! Ha!

My point was they are happy to take the cash but not ban it.

Those tobacco tax millions also get spent on the health system for Maccas addicts and p!ssheads who smash each other on Fri and Sat night, but no warnings appear on those products.
We all agree smoking is bad but the messages from Govt are mixed.

Yes Mark ,

Mcdonfatbums should not be in plain brown paper , bright white packet with a big fat clown on the package would be more suitable .

Or VB in stead of a amber bottle , maybe a skin colored container with blood stains splattered would be more suitable .

Nah maybe the same heart disease pics as the cigs packets for Maccas, and the beer is a good one.

I love my junk food ciggies and excessive drinking. But I balance it with a windsurf once a month

How about..."Suck it & see"

Slightly off topic, there's an opportunity there for investors to jump on the bandwagon of 'packaging' - ie; trendy boxes/covers for the ciggy packets (like your iphone covers & the like). Sadly enough, it will possibly make smoking 'appear' to be trendy again with the kids!

Very dumb decision - gov't! Should've stuck with improving awareness & advertising!

Go 4 broke - ways to change the packaging.....
1) Force(!!!) packets to have one of those voice chips U can get in B'day cards - - Open the packet and "3 months closer to death - yeeha"
2) Have a tough case - single cig' dispensed every time opened - have a (3) 2 digit code to unlock the case which randomly changes each time[}:)]
3)...

I reckon the money spent chasing faster drop off in new smokers would be better spent paying for graphic anti-smoking advertising bill boards in cheap holiday venues in our region. Dooh - tax free cig's in transit - If U allowed people to bring in 10 cartons it would be cheaper going on holiday 2 Indo' 2 buy your smokes!!

People R 2 creative to be stopped by the packaging - it is easy to re-package.
This point of control with the tbacii companies will likely be lost.

Since I was a kid the most obvious and to my mind the best visual loss of profile has been - banned advertising - no magazines - no venues etc etc, and the more recent approach removing their visibility from the lolli-shop shelf area in every shop / newsagent (very effective) - everywhere I go I would not be aware of cigarettes and their branding nor of the different brands sold - a really major change.

Time to move on go for a fat tax. Who wants to be in allied health without bloody good lifting aids - stuff getting compo' - much sooner be able to exercise / get on with a normal life.

Cheers

Bollocks. The message is simple, clear and unambiguous.

Smoking is bad and people should not do it.

Tobacco companies should not prey on people's weakness and the government is taking every reasonable step to prevent them, short of banning smoking.

Smoking is legal and people are free to do it if that is their choice. There are a series of tariff incentives and fairly minor laws that encourage smokers quit, and to limit the adverse effects of their choice on others. Smokers seem to go out of their way to impose their toxic and anti-social habit on everybody else (littering, passive smoke, bush fires)

What do you want to happen? The government to ban tobacco altogether and turn basically law abiding people into criminals?

You've actually got it more on topic than you realize.

The government has taxed the crap out of cigarettes to the point that they are not going really be able to get away with large tax increases on the product any more.
Sure, small increases 'due to inflation' will occur.

So what will a poor government do raise more money for the coffers? (coffers- get it??)

Everyone knows the plain packaging will be totally ineffectual, smokers love smoking, they are addicted and that is that.

The government has in fact created a whole new market for them to gain revenue from, and the brilliance lies in the fact that it is tied implicitly to the cigarette market.

With the rise of the 'bling culture', existing smokers in the 30 and under age group (as a general rule) will not put up with carrying daggy cigarette packets around.
The cigarette packet will now become yet another product of self expression, a way to display your personal style in exactly the way mobile phones are.

And on top of that, it's a multi-purchase market; how many people do you know with a few different mobile phone covers?

Well done government, well done, and as you told other countries to follow your lead, they will soon enough.

Who said innovation in government was dead?

^^^Kiterboy - that's what I was trying to say (but in many less words).

In actual fact, I can see that smoking will be even more popular as the teens buy them & pop the ciggy boxes into their own personalised cases (that match their iphones).

I wonder how long it will take the ciggy companies to find that loophole & give away a 'free-gift' (trendy cover) with every bulk purchase?
