How do kids lose out on sleep with daylight savings? If the kids get up at the crack of dawn they will get up at the crack of dawn.

One good thing about NSW is this debate is never heard and never will be.

I guess the overwhelming response to longer evenings will be a resounding no.

We live in a fantastic part of the world blessed with beautiful everything and spoilt only by the people who are too set in their ways to see any benefit in change.

Sad really.

I am FOR IT but I can see why some are not. Moby it is pretty simple:

If you live in the bush in a house with no aircon the kids won't go to sleep until 9:30pm if you're lucky. For many people the kids have to leave home at 0700 for the 90min drive to school on the bus so that means getting up at 5:30 or 6:00 and kids are a handful after insufficient sleep every night for a month.

For some people in rural communities summer is bad enough in a stinking hot house and it is still 30plus outside at 7:00pm. The DLS can really be tough on some people and the attitude of the cappacino-set who can walk 10min to the beach each evening is a bit annoying to them.

As I said I am all for it out of pure selfishness cos I can sail more.

daylight saving is crap.
I read a piece written by an American Indian a while back who said, when questioned about it
"only a white man would cut 12" off the bottom of a blanket, sew it on the top, and think he had a bigger blanket"

it will get chucked out and rightly so. Selfish people living in the city think they are the only inhabitants of WA.
The reason for bringing it in was to keep WA aligned with the rest of Aus but then they try to change that even by shortening the timeframe.

Feel sorry for us at smaller latitudes, where there is no daylight saving:

http://www.ga.gov.au/bin/astro/sunrisenset

Longest day of the year (isn't it?)
GOLD COAST Lat=-27?59'00" Long=+153?20'00"
TIMES OF SUNRISE AND SUNSET
(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)
Time zone: +10.00 hours
21/11/2009 Rise 0444 Set 1821

Anyway, everyone knows that since Daylight Savings has been introduced global warming has increased. This is obviously because of the extra sunlight.

I can understand there are specific situations where daylight savings makes life more difficult. Mark's example could happen. However in these situations there are answers. For example in western NSW has similar issues with school children and the hours of school.

The NSW Department of Education is trialling flexible school hours in a number of western district schools, starting school later and breaking the hours up a bit. Some of these schools face huge difficulties with staffing, ie 30% turnover of teachers a year, and students achieving basic literacy and numeracy outcomes.

The point is Sydney and Perth are at similar lattitudes, thus they have similar lengths of days and nights. Daylight savings won't fit all, perhaps we need a bit of flexibility. Most WAers live around Perth, most would benefit from daylight savings, reducing time differences for interstate business, after work recreation time etc.

I used to live on the Gold Coast QLD and dawn would break about 4.30am high summer and it was sunny by about 5am. I hated it coz all the bloody birds would be squarking and carrying on.

In the end though, daylight savings doesn't increase temperatures, doesn't stop cows from laying eggs and isn't a sign from the book of Revelations of the return of the anti-christ.
