We have known this couple for 4 yrs now , and recently they offered the use of their trailer for a trip to Perth .We considered them to be really good genuine freinds. However on the trip a tyre peeled off after 2 hrs of a 15 hr journey, not a flash start, changed it and continued on.
While driving at night we hit an emu , we were going about 75 km, bugger, anyway not too much damage.
After that we didn't go over 80, camped up for the night and continued on, slowly (no spare)
Another tyre peeled off after 2 more hrs, Sheet!
crawled into Gero at 50km , slow, on only 5 wheels!
Rang mate up and explained the situation, I said I would buy 2 new tyres, and leave the trailer in Gero and pick it up on the way back. being the the good mate I thougt he was , he said change the lot (6 of) and he would fix me up when we got back, great ,I thought.
At our regulay drinks on the beach on Friday ,it was MORE than obvious they were p,ssed off ( Handed me the money with much misery)
they said little and left after the shortest visit ever.
Went to the shop she helps out at this morning and my wife handed the money back, before being able to say anything , the response was , SO you got the message!!!. WTF
Both are in their 60,s , would have expected a far different response!!
As expected my wife was more than upset

Whats my next move? , in a damn small town.

Ohh I forgot, when returning the trailer , gave them $70 worth of homebrewing products (their favourites),

You topic heading "friends", Yeaaaa-Na
Obviously you offended them in some manner. Did you pay for the two tyres that failed, and he paid the other four? If he paid for the lot, he may think you are a tight arsed prick. General bloke standard, you munch it, you pay for it.
However if you copped your cost for two that were tin fruited, then, me, one on one, I would have asked what was up his ar5e. You dont ask you never going to know.
He and his, look like they have vast different values on life and possessions than you two if he thinks you need to cop cost on the lot.
North West, he has some learning to do as far as "how you view your mates" if he has this issue.
Did you ask for the home brew kit back
Anyway life is too short to be concerned about faffy issues like that.
So you can slot him under "Acquaintance" now then A

PS you Finnish that bloody shed yet, or is still skeleton

Sound like a couple of tossers. Kick them to the curb.
No point having people like that in your life.

Considering where you are, you will definitely run into him again often, so it's best that you sort things out.

It sounds a bit strange that you could shred two tyres in such a short time.
Did you have it loaded up until the tow bar was bending and the frame dragged on the ground? (There! I knew it would all fit! )

He might have thought you treated his belongings with total disregard, as often happens on borrowed equipment, so now he's a bit peeved.

When things have cooled off a bit, in a casual conversation you should ask him if there was anything he was unhappy about regarding the incident.
If he says there is, then listen without interrupting, think for a while so he can see you are considering his point of view, and then tell him he's a f***wit!

oops, no. Just tell him you understand but then let him know how you see it.
Be aware though that you're a Pom and therefore will probably have a completely unreasonable perspective of the whole incident.

If he has a valid point of view, which he will have unless he's another Pom, then try and smooth it over as best you can.
You can't get people off side in small towns because it makes life too uncomfortable.
Even if you still think he's wrong just smooth it over and keep that in mind in all future dealings.

sounds to me like your mate had old dodgy tyres on his trailer!

why did you change 6 tyres though?
did you check the wheels, tyres, bearings etc before using it- If I borrow- or loan anything, I make sure nothing is liable to fall off.

I would have paid for the 2 that blew and let him pay for the other 4. That's a fair deal. From his perspective how does he know they 'peeled off' and it wasn't that you hit some glass or a rock or something?

How much would it have cost to hire one for the trip? You'd still be in front.

Checked everything before leaving.
Trailer was empty.
Offered to pay for the 2 tyres, mate said don't worry about it, replace the lot , will fix you up when you get back.
Tyre shop man said the tyres were too old and were in his words absolutely ferked,
have my own 6mtr box trailer , it was fully loaded , sheds finished but full of work gear, and was told take mine ,not being used tyres are great! yea right.
He has since called me and asked why the money was returned, told him that freindship was far more important than money , his wife's not im my good books yet and I think I have seen her true colours
He wants to give me the money back and I declined, he was insistent, and good about it,I said whatever you think is a fair thing is fine by me. Once again I said your frendship is more important than money, he agreed.
We will see what transpires over the next week

Ohh the sheds done , so is the pool, now the house is a skeleton, everything to get to lock up shoul be here in the next 2 weeks

Cassa - probably have to sit back and ask self whether it's worth a rat's knacker , well what do you gain by attracting two problems you'll see everywhere you go in that small town as you say ?
You got home safe in the end , cash remediations were given , handed back and given again , words spoken yada yada etc
Reads that you have done the righty by the old dude(s) .... all good!

Interesting.
Seems to mirror experiences I have had - the blokes will shake hands and get over it, but the women are vitriolic (probably telling half the town and everyone on Facebook how bad the other one is too)

I wish ye luck.
