So, three physicists won the Nobel prize for demonstrating the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate.

Thus everything is getting further apart at an ever increasing rate.

From this I conclude it must be getting harder to get into heaven and at some point no matter how loud I shout nobody will hear me.

Would this also be a valid argument against a speeding ticket ? If the two points you were travelling between got further apart as you were travelling between them then your apparent speed would appear higher, officer.

Officer: Citizen, your speed is measured relative to the Earths surface..

Pretty cool either way, the increased expansion thing. In a closed univers obeying gravity you would expect a big bang to get pulled back by it's own gravity and return to its starting point, The Big Splat..

----

The last thread that discussed the Universe was deemed lockable.. Is a tread on the Expansion of the Universe as offensive as the thread on the Origin of the Universe.. Lets find out!

Nobel prizes kind of lost all credibility when they gave obama the peace prize

I hear you.
But Alfred Nobel did invent dynamite and was a major armaments manufacturer.

@Carantoc: U got me excited for a minute, I thought Juliar was gone.

The peace prize seems more political than the sciencey ones. As Side Show Bob pointed out while disputing the crime of attempted murder, "they don't hand out a Nobel Prize for Attempted Chemistry!.. "

Anyway the credibility of the award does not deter the accomplishments of those recipients.. This is great work, and the discovery would be it's own reward. This is some serious sh!t.. (maybe these guys know the answer to Marks reverse spinning galaxies??)

Three astronomers won the Nobel prize on Tuesday for discovering that the universe is apparently being blown apart by a mysterious force that cosmologists now call dark energy. They are Saul Perlmutter of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif., Brian P. Schmidt of the Australian National University in Weston Creek, Australia, and Adam G. Riess of the Space Telescope Science Institute and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

They were the leaders of two competing teams of astronomers who were trying to use the exploding stars known as Type 1a supernovae as cosmic lighthouses to measure the expansion of the universe. They were hoping to measure how fast the universe, which has been expanding since its fiery birth in the Big Bang 14 billion years ago, was slowing down, and thus to find out if its ultimate fate was to fall back together in what is called a Big Crunch or not. Instead, they reported in 1998, it was inexplicably speeding up, a conclusion that nobody would have accepted if not for the fact that both groups wound up with the same answer.

Feynman also won the award, and his attitude towards it is brilliant..

Harsh? What did he do?

More to the point what has he achieved? There are the same number of Americans in both Afghanistan and Iraq as were there when Bush started the whole show. All the troops he has removed have been spread around Bahrain and Pakistan and been replaced by contractors - read mercenaries.

*1 for me as well, He makes Juliar look like the fountain of truth.

My point was that judging people by one event or criteria is absurd. So barrack O is a piece of crap because there are the same number(or more) troops in Afgahnistan then when a Bush ran the show???. A bit harsh, Bush starts a war and Obama has to finish it, has the war escalated? has Obama established an exit stategy? NO NO NO NO he has failed because there are 17 more troops in Afghanistan than when he took over the job. Is that it? What about healthcare? the economy? What about Tax? NO NO, he's ****ed! Mother Teresa's an old slag, The UN are corrupt on ONE decision? Get real, the world is just a teensy weensy little bit more complicated than that and the idea that you can bag someone by one stroke of over simplicity is just nutty. I'm a really excellent person because I've got a white hat. GEEEEEEEEEEEEZ
