Laws passed 22nd August 2012 will allow authorities to collect and keep Australians' internet records, including their web-browsing history, social media activity and emails.

Attorney-General Nicola Roxon said the laws would help police track cyber-criminals around the globe, and would give authorities the power to find people engaged in ... infringement of copyright and intellectual property.

This is only applicable to suspected criminals.

Any person can be 'suspected' of a criminal activity.

They'll still need a warrant and all, just like when they request your phone calls. Warrant has to be approved yada yada. You know how many resources they have to catch all of Australia downloading pirate material (as they do)? Sweet F A. They don't want to work overtime any more than you do.

I get the feeling it's a bunch of people with huge movie collections rotting away unwatched on a NAS somewhere that are all excited because now they can say at a party "yeah baby, I have over 2 TB on my HD and the Feds are all like tracking me, but LOL I use TOR all the time and that's why ...is this turning you on yet? Yeah digital freedom baby. The internet is all about freedom which is why I'm signed up for six months with iinet and I use 90% of the download collecting tv and movies I don't physically have the time to watch ...i'm bad, are you turned on yet. Did I mention V for Vendetta which is my favourite movie of all time even though the main symbolism is from a man that wanted to restore power to the Vatican. I get it."
