The wife just suggested that we go to Hawaii for a holiday. I didnt argue. We are talking November

Given we are both intermediate SUP, we both are sailors, I am a diver and surfer (tho not game for big winter north shore) generally any watersports, what islands should we look at, what activities (cultural & watersports) should we not miss and any recommendations on accomodation/restuarants etc.

Oh yeah I dont think we can leave the kids at home (4 & 2 years old)

Maui is the place you need to look at,

try a condo on the south side, plenty of options at Kehei or Maalea, or if you want to stay closer to the wind, try Paia or Sprecks.
Kehei will give you more options for condo apartments with pools and a bar, might cost you around 100-200 a night,

Maui has the best options when it comes to rentals - SUP and Sail, we go through Hi-Tech, speak to Giampaolo or Russ or Alex, all are sailors and very helpful,

Food - Theres lots of it, its america, explore

Cultural, head to Hana, lots of cool Hawaiian activities, lots advertised, some good markets in Lahaina and Wailea to check out,

Plenty of waterfalls to explore, snorkelling everywhere,

Maui is awesome - that is all

Aparently Oahu is good for all of the above as well, but we have pretty much only ever seen the Honolulu airport,

Happy to discuss over the phone if you want some additional info,

Waikiki !! Just get a nice hotel room there... If you can afford the old original Jewel of The Pacific, stay at the Sherraton Moana.

www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/hnlwi-moana-surfrider-a-westin-resort-and-spa-waikiki-beach/

Alternatively, stay somewhere cheaper, and walk through its Grand Foyers a few times on your trip. Walking through is free!!

Don't get the cheap bus to your hotel. Just get a taxi. Taxi is pretty cheap, drops you at the door, heaps quicker. If on the bus, you might be 3rd last to get dropped off, and just circle around 10 hotels before yours... and with the one way streets, you will probably have passed close by to your hotel about 2 times before that anyway!

Going back home, just book a Limo to the airport. If it's AM, they are about the same price as a taxi.

Eating, Duke's on the beach is a must. Tables down the front are right on the beach. Great atmosphere.

Steinlager is cheap! Enjoy.

If you like Quiksilver gear, there's a few shops... Hawaii influence... They have a good range of "Men's" clothes also, rather than teenager clothes. Quiksilver "Silver Edition"...

Going to another island is also fun. Kaua'i is really nice. Also consider Maui.

Duration... If you are thinking 7 days, go for 10. If you are thinking 10, go for 14.. etc!

14-16 days is a good start... 7 Days Oahu, and 7 Days on Maui or Kaua'i.

I would stay away from oahu unless you want a mix of nth shore life and sth shore chaos. There's waves on the east and west as well and easy to get around with busses cheap and hire cars abundant.
Big isl, kaui etc are awesome and really laid back, less crowded in the surf and my pic.

Ka'u'a'i?

Ma'u'i?

...damn it, I'm going next year. That's it. Been twice before and it was really good. Even just driving around Oahu was amazing; the landscapes. Maui was beautiful.

Or WA?

Fiji... Nope, go for Hawaii. You'll be changing planes in Sydney anyway. Go for Hawaii. More to see and do...

Both will cost roughly the same... Fiji can be cheaper...

Both are really nice...

The winners; (H=Hawaii, F=Fiji)
Better Hotels - H
Better Shopping - H
Ease of access to waves - H
Snorkeling - F, but for H is also great

Basically if you park it up at Waikiki, there's a heap of different things to do around there...

If you park it up in Fiji (at almost any chosen spot), there's less going on, and probably more lounging around, chilling up, doing nothing...

You can still chill out at Waikiki in amongst the action!

Hawaii is a great places and has some good hotels and restaurants where you can stay during your visit at there. Sherraton Moana is a good one but I think Aqua Waikiki Pearl and Aston Waikiki Circle Hotel are also good for living.

Preferably preceding spending a day in the water in Waikiki it's not really surfing, more like people watching in the water .

Duke's usually has a band on most nights

Theres a good Mexican place a block back at the main lights on the beach.

Having just returned from Hawaii i'll say this; if you want a chilled out atmosphere which is super friendly, mega chilled, way less people but more on the Hiking/site seeing/general chill side of things go to Maui nth shore. If on the other hand you want sit around on a **** beach sinking cocktails, riding jetskis, shopping and watching people on what amounts to a combination of the Gold Coast crossed with Vegas all wrapped up in a bag of hobo go to Waikiki on Oahu.

Just don't book your accommodation before going...fly into Oahu (pre booked accommodation for this part as you have 2 littlies)
and then Island hop...
You can get accommodation + car hire it's much cheaper that way....
and you will be usually offered an upgraded room when you get to your accommodation....
On Hawaii the big island at Kailua Kona they have an Ultra marathon about middle of November..so I would not go around the time it's on, as your choice on cheaper accommodation drops...
Have a think about going to Molokai it's more unspolit than any of the rest of the islands ....

If you want to sail then go to the north shore of Maui, period end of sentence.
In November there could probably be waves, but possibly not.
I would stay away from the zoo that is Oahu.
I would not advise island hopping, get to one place and settle in and relax.

we just got back from Hawaii and did all those things... the diving was pretty ordinary though.. IMO the place to be is Oahu.. we stayed at Hilton Hawaiian Villiage in waikiki.. do you the ususal things and then head up to north shore for a few days.. we stayed 7 nights which was no where near enough time, so we booked again last week for 14 nights in june next year..

I suppose it depends upon how you feel about big cities, Honolulu on Oahu is a big city with lots of nightlife and things to do.
North shore of Maui is pretty quiet, what do you want?
I have been living in small towns for a long time, big cities are not really for me.

Over here now staying in Oahu. Great place really friendly locals and the food and drinks cheap. Staying at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel which is at the bottom end of Waikiki beach and directly opposite the water. We upgraded to a junior suite and it was well worth the extra money. It can get a bit noisy at night though and its about 1/2 km from the zoo and aquarium. Transport is good around the place with cheap busses and the taxis are reasonable. There are plenty of attractions to keep everybody happy. best of all no rubbish lying around unlike some of our Asian brother countries, although the homeless are quite evident but they dont hassle. Only problem for me is there is no surf except the small amount along Waikiki apparently North Shore and surrounding areas dont work until their summer, bummer. all in all very happy and would recommend the place to any one,,, kev

Just got into Wakiki today after 8 beautiful days on the south shore of Kauai. Freaking breathtaking magnificent little island.

The highest mountain on Kauai gets the highest rainfall on earth, yet the Sth West has wild fires currently due to drought. However, you still get 72 channels on TV, can buy Levi's jeans for $13, eat some of the freshest tastiest sashimi and local fruit, and explore the small and spectacular island in a Mustang. Awesome, only bummer for me is my heel which now contains 19 Sea Urchin barbs inbedded in my foot - ouch! Not much surf this time of year, a little on the windy side for SUP - Nov would be better.

+1 for Kauai, definitely one of the best places I have been too. If you have a spare couple of days, walk Kalalau trail, and check out the sunset from above Kalalau valley as well. Spectatular.

Sitting here in my Wakiki motel room looking down at the street below at 1:00am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning it strikes me as kind of odd that it's dead. I remember that from last time I was here 2 years ago. Its a pretty crass sort of place that's not to dissimilar to the GC, but there is no nightlife. When I get sick from the reality TV on offer, and want to go out for a drink and a party later on tonight or another night what are my options?

Just answering my own question: went down Kuhui St to the ABC shop to buy some orange juice but it was closed, saw that the street was pumping, even got a small piece of spew on my new aqua shoe as a result of some drunk hurling his guts out. Tons of drunks, nightclubs and hookers there - but no OJ. Asked at reception if they had some and she said "try Burger King"

Vodka and Arizona iced tea, mixed with free Internet and trashy TV is just dandy.
