The number of cores is going to be determined by the number of solanoids. We usually cabletie the cable to the pressure pipe then tuck it underneath. You could put it in it's own conduit if your really anal or if your running under a slab. How many solanoids you running? Ps I'm a landscaper, dont think i've ever seen a sparky put in an irrigation system.

yeah well mate here in the west i know that we set up a few and do a bloddy good job of it, not that i have got tikets or anything!!!

I think AS3000 Aust & NZ Wiring Rules says you should keep ELV separated from 240. To put in a conduit will protect the cable so that makes sense .If it s in slab you could re-pullit in if you had 2 . You would at least need 2 cores but if you have more solnoids then you could use a multicore cable and choose the colour cores you want. I see you are in WA so there will be variation from State to state with regs Hope this helps .Just remember messing about with Electricity no matter what Voltage can be hazzardous .ie you might think you have yor 24 volts but instead you might have 240 so be very careful or there will no more sailing for you
