Gas fittings use a left handed thread, don't they?

yeah but be careful, you don't want a cross thread.

if you use your right hand, you have to turn counter clockwise, to tighten. Otherwise you'll thread it. If you use your left hand you have to put the spanner on the other way and turn the female fitting from north to south.If you're looking up at the fitting reverse all this.
