Email from our H & S officer:

Hi Team,

I'm sure none of you would be silly enough to jay-walk anyway but you can pass the message on to friends and family...

The Police are currently targeting the CBD area for jay-walkers and imposing fines. Numerous people have been fined so far so please ensure you are using the pedestrian crossings.

What the...!? Look I'm sorry, but I'm 35, I know how to cross a f*cking road! You look left, you look right if there's no traffic you cross. Walking to work I see people patiently waiting for the green man, with not a car in sight. If you get hit crossing the road then you're doing the gene pool a favour.

You guys mustn't have much crime over there in WA......if targeting people not crossing the road properly requires so much attention?!?

I'd like to see signs showing...

"Police targeting murderers!"

or.....

"Police targeting thieves!"

or.....

"Police targeting gang bashings"

or.....

"Police targeting vandals and people destroying property"

or.....

"Police targeting people targeting Police?!?"

That'd get my vote!

Give them a bigger fine. It farking annoying, i had a driving lesson today, adn there were idiots walking diagonally across the street, without looking, at snail speed. If i wasnt in a lesson it would be window down, hand out, finger up, voice on, accelerator down, loud thud, accelerater further down.
I do think they should be targetting other stuff, but it is prettyu annoying.

Er... u learning to drive in the CBD?

Pedestrians always have right of way, except on the freeway. Wait till u have your license before u make comments like this.

(Sorry if i took a joke out of context) but if u read what other ppl are saying most ppl know how to cross the road

I was learning at city west. Pretty close to the city. my instructor siad they were breaking the law.
I dont think pedestrians always have right of way. Only when you are turning. Or at a cross walk.
What difference does having a liscence make? Im still driving on the same road....

Pedestrians do not always have right of way. I got my drive safe book out (not to prove anyone wrong, but i wanted to see if i was wrong).

Drivers and riders MUST give way to pedestrians (including peopple in wheel chairs) who are:
-crossing at an intersection in front of your turning vehicle;or
-crossing at a pedestrian crossing (zebra) or children's crossing;or
-crossing at a marked foot crossing (traffic signal controlled crossing for vehicles and pedestrian lights for pediestrians) when a light facing vehicles is flashing yellow or red;or
-crossing in front of your vehicle at a slip lane (a left turn at an intersection where there is an island between that lane and lanes for other traffic)

that is word for word. Was published in 05, so if the rules have changed meh.

I think drivers should have right of way. But when there isn't a car in sight surely we should be able to cross a road without having to wait for a little green man to tell us too?

We wouldnt have to run em over if they were obeying the law.
If no cars are around sure go for your life. But its a safety thing, and a person is going to come off second best.

stuff it man, if some one wants me to take my foot off the accelerator for 5 seconds i really dont care. im just going to get to the next set of red lights quicker if i dont.
sitting behind the wheel causing pollution and wasting a limited resource doesnt make me god so twhy should it work for you? take it into consideration next time you can let someone in or cross ahead of you.
perth drivers forget they are equal to the guy on the other side of the glass most of the time.

It doesn't matter what the publications say.....if you 'walk' into a car, you might get abused - no legal matter......if you 'kill' a pedestrian by hitting them with your car, because you thought you had the right of way......you better pack your vas, and best pair of orange coveralls!!!

Basically, you could get angry about the situation and abuse all walkers, or slow down, let the pedestrians pass, chillin' out, singing along with your fave tune, and everyone gets to their destination alive......prob solved!

As for Zed's initial post.....cross the road when there's no cars in sight, even if the little man's red, but don't complain if you get a fine from an 'undercover' secret jay-walking detective hiding in the shadows, ready to pounce on some poor innocent jay-walker!!!!

You did recieve your warning!

They had a crack down on jay walking in Adelaide recently after a couple of people were killed; personally if you can't cross the road without being hit by a car then the gene pool ain't gonna miss you, standard Darwin principle.
