Kites and toys banned at beach
22nd September 2010

BUNDABERG NEWSMAIL, OFFBEAT STORY.

BEACHGOERS could soon be fined up to $500 for flying kites, using oversized umbrellas, taking photographs or digging holes at a popular Perth beach.

Under a proposal to be considered by the Town of Cottesloe in Perth's western suburbs this month, 60 clauses will be added to the council's beach law, banning a total of 100 listed activities at the famous beach.

According to an officer report, the current law lacks in certain areas and requires more specific controls over beach activities.

"The increase in the popularity of the beach and the subsequent increase in the commercial and event usage of the beach and beach reserve have also highlighted the existing law is now inadequate to deal with certain demands and situations," the report said.

If the proposal is passed, the new rules could see alcohol, glass bottles and containers banned.

It will also be illegal to dive off the popular Cottesloe pylon, drop cigarette butts, use toy vehicles and erect umbrellas bigger than three square metres.

Obstructing steps and pathways, and wasting water by leaving taps running will also be prohibited.

Fines will range from $100 to $500.

Talkback radio was running hot over the debate on Wednesday with many callers saying the new rules being proposed were too strict, while others thought it would make the beach better.

After the council considers the proposal, the draft laws will be advertised statewide for public comment.

whilst over in pert for work i had a bit of time off and went to enjoy some sunshine at that beach and was immensely amused by the great big yellow sign that reads, 'WARNING, WATER.'

Very sad

Another public asset has just become privatised. More important for concerts and gala (private) weddings to be held there, rather than just as a place where people can go and enjoy themselves.

Yes, it can be a fun place.

Last time we had Sunday arvo picnic fish and chips by the teahouse - watching the sun go down - four young blokes came streaming through chasing another guy who they clearly had it in for. One bloke was grasping a broken off Corona stubbie in his hand.

They were so pissed they were oblivious to the rest of humanity there. Clearly didn't care at all.

Just what we needed to liven up our family outing.
