Blainey wasn't that flash, no. He was placed in a no win situation as MacArthur insisted, and got his way that he had a direct line to Prime Minster, and by-passed Blainey.

Blaineys worst was the New Guinea campaign. Still to this day it went unexplained why when he visited the front line, he removed the most experienced officer Potts who, to his final rest, never publicly retaliated or explained what happened
