Long ago in a galaxy far away,
popular opinion fired up by all the knowledgeable experts deemed that North Vietnam was trying to turn that part of the world communist.
Anyone who looked into that and had doubts regarding the logic was said to be a communist sympathiser and shouted down as a "red" and "unpatriotic"
Because of this majority opinion, we went off to war to beat the crap out of a country which was doing nothing more than trying to maintain it's own sovereignty, in this case, trying to stop the French from returning to re-claim the colony it had previously abandoned to the Japanese in WW2.
It was a wrong war based on a wrong conclusion based the opinon of a majority of experts.
The opinion of the knowledgeable majority was WRONG!
It took 30 years for them to admit this.

More recently, popular opinion fed by the experts who were knowledgeable in the matter said that Iraq was full of weapons of mass destruction.
"All the experts in this field" said "All the evidence supports this" and we need to invade Iraq and save the world.
Anyone who said anything against this view was deemed to be un-patriotic and a terrorist sympathiser.
So we joined all the patriotic heroes in a "coalition of the willing" and went off and beat the crap out of the Iraqis.

As we now know, all the experts were WRONG. There were no weapons of mass destruction. None at all. Not even one.
To their credit, at least they reported this factually and didn't plant any false evidence.

The point is, their "irrefutable and compelling evidence" was wrong.
It was manipulated to produce the result they wanted.

It's not that the experts were evil people intending to bring about an injustice. For the most part , they were probably well meaning people who firmly believed they were doing the right thing.
But now with the benefit of hindsight it is clear that they selected the evidence to be consistent with the result that they believed to be correct, and overlooked, or diminished and in some cases altered the evidence which was not consistent with their belief.

Now, popular opinion cultivated and supported by "almost all reputable scientific opinion" says that global warming is almost entirely cause by human activity.
They might be right. And there might have been weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
But neither argument is or was made valid by the manipulated evidence put up by the so called experts.
The "evidence" of the computer modelling is tainted evidence simply because the computer models were constructed and manipulated until they came up with the result they wanted. If the model didn't produce the desired result then it was scrapped or altered until it did.
That is a long way short of compelling evidence.

Again, probably by well meaning people who believe they are doing the right thing.
I would suggest that stifling reasoned comment is not the right thing.
Two threads were deleted yesterday.
Both were polite and reasoned.
None mentioned conspiracies.

It's not a conspiracy. It's just bad science.

It would be interesting to find out also why offensive posts like Poor relatives above are

still present when other more weighty posts seem to have disappeared

Been done many times. Try reading the forum rules. Which incidentally include something along the lines of "no whining about the forum admins (email them instead)".

the only reason these forums even exsist is for the banner advertising...

why are there even so many catergories for what is only allowed to be discussed which essentially the same topic in ever catergory, watersports

why do you need general discussion in a watersport forum if you are only allowed to discuss watersports...

wouldn't every catergory generally be about watersports...?

this place has gotten pretty boring since the boring people wanted everyone else to be boring and made the boring moderators kowtow to their boring demands

but yes this forum has nothing to do with anything except advertising

FFS doc, how many time does it need to be clearly stated that you CAN talk about anything you want in General Discussion. (As evidenced by the varity of topics in there right now.)

You can post whatever you please until such time as something becomes too controversial and generates agro or is posted so much it causes annoyance to many members.

If you don't believe me go ahead and post a joke, or a strawberry shortcake recipe or a how tie your shoelaces tutorial.
You are allowed to!
UNTIL you post hundreds of jokes non stop, or tons of recipes and clog up the forum, and then the mods may ask you to desist.
