Does anyone have any personal experiences with this that they would care to share? I never heard of it until a couple of weeks ago and am surprised how many people don't know about it.

Plain old Sorbolene works fine

But seriously.. (after a quick google) we have toothpaste these days. It doesn't take 15-20 minutes.

Geez Sambo, still alive! Well done!

In my opinion, the Oil Pulling bizzo is mostly another load of snake oil.
The fact that it has been around for centuries and is still not widely known or used is proof of that.
However, I did say "mostly" because there may be a very slight benefit in the small amount of Oleuropein absorbed through the mouth lining if you swish with olive oil, as some recommend.

But then if that's the case, just hop out and buy some liquid Olive Leaf Extract and take a spoonfull or two (about 10 to 15 ml) each day and that will give you heaps more of the active ingredient (oleuropein) than swishing a bit of oil through your mouth. Also, it only takes 30 seconds whereas the swishing is sposed to take 20 to 30 minutes. And really, who is going to bother with a 30 minute procedure each morning?
And you're in luck because one of the biggest producers of Olive Leaf Extract in the world is right there in Queensland where you are. They have a web site. Lookem up. You can buy it direct or from a chemist at twice the price.

Also, if you think you are having trouble with toxic chemical buildup, splash out on a course of chelation and that should fix that. You can look that up on the web too, under "chelation therapy". Unfortunately that is a lot more expensive than olive leaf extract, usually around $5000. There are a number of places in queensland that can offer that as well.

sambo i bet you've got a doona with magnets in it, definatley a water filter (forget about the flouride - what about the chlorine!) what about one of those rubber straps to "earth" the car and stop car sickness? And a brock crystal or a hiclone under the bonnet!

Do you use a mobile phone by any chance? now there's something you should be worried about!

There are many other natural therapies around that you should consider too. They been around for ages, and similarly there are plenty of books written by people with real medical degrees (Dr. Bruce Fife is a certified nutritionist and naturopathic physician Not a recognised Medical doctor). If you read the words on the book cover there are no solid statements "This book COULD have the solution", "ALL disease starts in the mouth, MOST of the chronic...", "you are BOUND TO HAVE other health problems". This is pseudoscience, not science.

There are plenty of quacks out there trying to sell you the latest thing in alternative healthcare (Over 10,000 books listed at Amazon under "Natural Therapy". There is NO peer reviewed scientific evidence that Oil Pulling works. Having said that there is also no evidence that it does any harm either.

I would put it in the same bucket as Aromatherapy, Reiki Massage, Homeopathy etc. There is no solid science behind them, but if you get a benefit, more power to you.

And just to make my position clear - I am an eternal Skeptic, and always will be.

Can someone please explain to me, thoroughly, how exactly toxins build up in my body?

Where/why/how does my body store toxins?
What are they, exactly?

etc.

toxins build up in my body in the groinal region, where they must be excised by pulling, but not with oil. that's gross.

Basically it works like this.
A lot of the minerals and compounds which you eat end up in the blood.
So do some of the compounds in the air, gound and water etc, because they are absorbed through the lungs and the skin.
Your blood passes through your kidneys and they try to filter out what you don't need and flush it out with your next wiz. They do a very good job of this but unfortunately, some things which you really don't want or need, are not flushed because your kidneys can't filter them out for a number of reasons.
e.g. they can't filter lead compounds out of the body and therefore lead is cumulative, as are most heavy metals.
There are heaps of these materials which we don't want in us and because they are cumulative, they build up over your entire lifetime. They are generally stored in the fat but also contaminate your body cells.

Sooooo, when you are young they are in small amount and thus you are entitled to think that the whole philosophy is all a load of horse feathers because you feel just great, so what's the problem?.
Unfortunately, as you get older, the amounts build up to the extent that they begin to have a bad effect on you health.
Because the symptoms come on very slowly over a very long time it is easy to dismiss them as just being a consequence of old age. i.e old people just naturally have bad health.
Well, that's not entirely true. Old people can still have very good health so long as they are not half poisoned by a lifetime's accumulation of toxic waste, as most old people are in modern society.

The easiest way to get rid of this buildup is to get the kidneys to recognise compounds that the body doesnt want and to be able to filter them out.
Chelation does just that. It is an infusion of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetate, spelling?) which bonds to the toxic compounds and is then recognised by the kidneys and filtered out and flushed.
EDTA is itsef toxic but since it is able to be flushed by the kidneys within 24 hours, it is not cumulative and in small doses does not present a problem.

All these other processes such as oil pulling are a very dubious solution to the problem and in my opinion, are all snake oil.

Chelation is the accepted treatment for lead poisoning and heavy metal poisoning. I believe it has much wider benefits, and so do many others.
It is now very widely used worldwide.

(PS. I dont offer the service or have any financial interest in any business that does.)

This is a direct quote from my (soon to be doctor) daughter
who doesn't have time to spell kurrecterly
(Don't know where she got her scepticism/sarcasm from

"yeah chelation works to get rid of stuff but point is why swallow something toxic to get rid of seomthing toxic that is not bothering you. plus most chelators need to work before you absorb the compund like charcol is given in firt hr of overdoses of some drugs. If the hippies really what there renal function improved they can sign up for dialysis but i reckon you won't find many takers. If you eat healthy unprocessed food for majority of time your be fine. If you choose bad input to you body then sux up the consequences!"

Hey Wineman. All that time you daughter was down in your wine cellar "studying", I think she might have been doing something else.
I would advise that you do a stock take of your wine collection. It might be a few vats short.

Well isn't that just the best thing about having teenagers around?
You don't need Google, Wickedpedia, or even the internet because they just know every bloody thing! Not always right mind you. In fact mostly not, but at least you have an instant answer to everything you need to know plus an answer to things you don't even want to know.

Yep. They have what I call H.U.Y.A.** Syndrome.

Mostly occurs in 18-24 year olds - I know I had it.
Unfortunately, my wife reckons I suffer from it occasionally .
They grow out of it, something about maturity (which my kids reckon I missed out on)

Teenagers ... You know how they know everything

When I was 16, I was amazed at how little my old man knew. After I moved out and lived in the world for a while, I returned to see the old codger when I was 21.

It was remarkable how much he had learnt since I'd been away.
