Oakajee moves towards construction

Friday, January 18, 2008

Angela Kean

THE $A3 billion Oakajee port and rail project in Western Australia's Mid-West region is closer to construction following the Australian Government's approval of investment agreements signed late last year between Yilgarn Infrastructure and five major Chinese companies.

The Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) approval paves the way for the implementation of the investment agreements, which Yilgarn signed with steel producers Sinosteel and Anshan Iron and Steel Group, as well as China Railway Engineering Corporation, China Railway Group and China Communications Construction.

The story goes on

Yeh it hurts, the little bloke doesn't seem to have much say these days, unless we form huge numbers, as in "Save the Ningaloo Reef" campaign. Not enough windsurfers, surfers, or kitesurfers around to to create a strong political movement. It's so precious to us, but means nothing to govt or big business, and the rest of the community is apathetic because they derive no value from it

But I'd still like to know from Geraldton Windsurfing Club: what was the petition result? I will ring the West Australian and try to get a story run but they will need to have at least a quote like "3,000 names presented to the premier and he didn't even reply to us"

Trouble is we have asked twice on this forum and they haven't told us a result yet

Nasty business, but my guess is the majority of people are thinking $$$$ and how they are going to get a bit of that 3 billion, at least that's the impression that I get speaking to people.

If I was a betting man my money would be on it not going ahead or at least not for a long time, the logistics of construction seam optomistic to me .There was plenty of media releases and agreement signing with Kingstream also, a lot of talk in general.

There was an article in the local rag this week about the possible loss of future wind events a coro because of the alleged affects the port could have on coro.

Mark there has been several replys from the GWC ,on this forum to your question.

There has been an extensive effort to forward a case for future compensation for an artificial reef, come wave machine with vibrating sea floor, attachments works and jerks. .............

Please call John Ekersly 99212662 (PUBLIC RELATIONS GWC)
