Gallipoli Cruise 2015

I heard an ad for it on talk back radio. Like 37yo Mark_Australia - I learn everything there is to know on AM.

Have we gone a bit too far with this Gallipoli Thingo? Seems really crass to me.

Check out the entertainment on board:

We were there for the ANZAC day parade I think. I'm not sure why else we would have gone there.

I know some people like to go to Gallipoli, and for some its a rite-of-passage, but I think a cruise there is a bit off. (but hey, I am opinionated!)

A cruise where "Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available 24/7 and breakfast will follow the service" is not really respecting the memory of the soldiers that went there and faced an impossible task. There were no 24x7 coffee, tea, and biscuits for them.

Maybe, if its only for servicemen, that otherwise can't get there, but a luxury cruise would somehow seem wrong.

I think Anzac day is a good time to remember how crazy war can be, how destructive it can be, and how so many suffered. Also a good time to show respect to those that suffered for it.

I wince when I hear others say they made it there to play two-up and get plastered, as if it is an accomplishment.

^^^ agree totally.

Best service I ever went to was when we had a sudden weather change, dropped to about 16deg, 30kn winds and rain.
Everone was near on hypothermic by the end.
A lady raced up to Kmart and borrowed about 20 umbrellas and started giving them out to all the old ladies. Every single one of them refused as there was not enough to go around. None of the diggers would take one if it meant their mate didn't get one.

Sombre moment realising life could be exactly like that moment - but you are underfed, have the sh!ts and are being shot at. For 3 years.

What I would love to see (and it would prove we had really matured as a nation) is a squad of pacifists that had refused to go to war because of their beliefs, marching in the ANZAC Day parade. It takes courage to stand against the tide of popular opinion.

Elbau, in my opinion, I think that would be mixing up two things.

I don't see Anzac day as promoting war, or justifying the move to war. I see it as respecting those that did, for whatever reason, for suffering a loss. A reminder of how bad it can be.

Standing against popular opinion is one thing, but not the same thing. Did a pacifist really suffer that much in comparison?

Adolf the cruise thing (I didn't hit the link, couldn't be bothered) is because there will be a ballot for who gets to go, and who doesn't at the 100 year mark on-shore.
Selecting a cruise so one can sit off the Coast avoids any disappointment for being balloted out of being there on the day. Only so many can fit in so they say.

ANZAC day is for remembrance of those who didn't make it home. Always wondered on what sort of Australia and New Zealand we would have now if none of our lads had lost individual lived in all campaigns WW1
Looking at the remembrance wall at the war memorial in Canberra shook me up when I saw how many names were just on that section alone.
