I'm after a rugged camera that does great photos, 1080p video and maybe GPS.

I've had a GoPro and don't want another.
I don't want to attach it to a helmet, I want to keep it in a pocket, or around my neck and pull it out when I need it. I'm over point of view videos and just want nice photos of me and mates on the water, fooling around sandbars, islands.

It needs to take really good quality photos.
Easy to operate one handed.
Tough and reliable without the battery discharging by itself.
1080p video, preferably stabilised.
GPS, not essential but nice to have because we some times go for distance.

Can anyone recommend me one?

I bought a "Panasonic FT4" 12 months ago.
It has had a pretty rough life and seems to be none the worse for it. Mounted to my kite buggy and land yachts and has handled the abuse. Ocean shots from a kayak it seems to handle the sun glare really well.

12.1 Megapixels stills, GPS, Compass, altimeter and barometer. Waterproof to 12 meters for 60mins, and the best bit "4.6X optical zoom". Everything looks too far away with the Gopro.
(18.6 digital zoom which is grainy and useless at this range, but very handy for reading street signs without your binoculars while holidaying over seas).

It knocks out a nice video in 1920 x 1080 with AVCHD or MP4 if needed. Stabilised on or off.

It isn't as protected as a Gopro (just in a silicon jacket) but it's been run over many times by buggys and yachts on the salt lakes and beach.

A bit harder to mount as it only has a 1/4" threaded socket in the base of the case.

I've converted a few (2) Gopro users here, after they used mine.

I have a nikon AW110. Great camera. Took it through the jungles, mud and rivers in PNG last week and other than the lens getting dirty it performed faultlessly. I think in tough environments, dirt on the lens is always an issue.

Shock and water proof, 1080 video, 16mp etc. Battery life is OK, enough for a days full use but batterys on ebay are $12 and a must.

FT5 looks nice and i think is probably number #1 but its also expensive considering you can buy an AW100 nikon which is still a great adventure camera for about $200 now the AW110 is out. The AW110 isnt really much better either.

I've got a couple Canon D20's http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Waterproof-Stabilized-Wide-Angle/dp/B0075SUKIC/ref=sr_1_1

If you want quality images you need to shoot RAW... then manually process, unfortunately there are no RAW shooting waterproof cams. But with the Canon D20 you can load CHKD which will allow you to shoot RAW. chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

I can do you mates rates on one ($195)

But if RAW isn't your thing it's ~ equivalent to the FT4 and AW110... and if I take my bias hat off... the Olympus TG-2 is probably the best you can get. f2 lens and meets all your requirements.

I've got a Panasonic TS5/FT5 newer version of the FT4) scored it for $380 from hongkong while our AUD$ was still on parity, think they retail for $500 here though. IMO its damn awesome...I have it mounted on the tip of my mast and it gets the life shaken out of it in choppy seas and it hasn't missed a beat. Full HD 60fps/1080p recording (50fps in PAL). It has great battery life compared to other tough cams..and I especially like the burst modes. It has Wifi and NFC so you can remotely control it with a smart device, and you can download the content over wifi if you want to. Another good choice is the Olympus Tough TG-2, though the Oly only does 30fps in Full HD. One thing to note is the Oly doesn't have a seperate battery charger which is a bit of a pain in the arse if you have 2 or more batteries because you cannot have one on charge while using the camera.

Google is your friend....check out the reviews....The Pana and Oly are the best two out of the rest if you are willing to spend the money...But as mentioned above they are both in the higher $$$ bracket, but you do get an outstanding camera for your money

I've got a Fujifilm XP50... cost Y8,000 (about US$80) and is supposed to be water, dust, cold, and shock-proof. Takes fine photos and HD video... and does really easy panoramas.

The upper models have GPS and crap like that... there's plenty of options in the rugged camera market these days.
