There's gas in them there hills as well............ gas I tells you, and lots, lots, lots more gas offshore too.

Why mine coal when they could drill for gas?

Exploration has occured next to Ningaloo Reef and on Scott Reef of Broome without any environmental impact so why not drill for gas off the Capes?

Better than a coal mine in the backyard and the 'locals' won't even know the rigs are over the horizon, except when they catch the helo to work every 3 weeks.

I have worked with several contractors at Collies Coal industry [less than an hour from home] and I am told our WA coal is the poorest quality / lowest grade in OZ... Margaret River doesn't need this. Doggie is right - Big Dollars will pay to get it. Big Doallrs still seems to get a lot of support in politics - unfortunately... Mining is the backbone of WA, especially in this post recession. So it will be a big fight to stop it. But I am with you... I 2nd the Off shore GAS....

Couldn't disagree more, they're already digging up s-loads of coal in Aus, why do it in any one else's back yard.

And as for Ningaloo Reef and Scott Reef, just don't let BP any where near it but then maybe better your reef than ours

Maybe when the people in Margs who don't do water sports (ie rich tree-change types from Perth) sign all the "save Oakagee" petitions, then I will consider theirs

I imagine they all had no complaints when the mining driven real estate boom made their $200K properties in Margs turn into $1million properties in the last few years?

Or when the Margs tourism industry CAN sell accomodation, gourmet cheeses, wines, beer etc to rich people because, yep you guessed it, mining has increased disposable income for many people.

Don't recall any of the wealthier types in Margs whining that they are making money from those who dig big holes in the ground?

Has Margaret River rejected the Royalties For Regions funding???

"Massive hypocrites. What are you doing to stop the selling off our resources to China? other than whingeing..."

Have put my concerns and more in writing to Barnett for Mining sell off and Redman for Agriculture sell off! If that's Whingeing, then guilty as charged...

Mark, I agree with some of what you say. Tho as of now there are still a good No of regular everyday people there including farmers trying to hang on. I am an hour and a 1/2 Nth of there and know some of these folk well. They are the hold outs I guess in a sea of Big spenders who come down there. I am in this for them.... The Coal mine isn't for their benefit or ours. Collie and its surrounds has a mountain still untapped. Friends bordering the super pit sold their farm for coal mining and so did their neighbours as part of a 25 year mining plan and it goes further in area and in years and that is just the nth eastern edge of the pit. Griffin have plans for 8 power stations at the Blue Waters Collie site alone. All approved. Last time I was working there, 2 were under construction. Rick Stowe went guts up, but the Coal and expansion is still there. Collie still has many a year left in it! I am 40mins from Collie as the crow flies - If they want my farm for coal they can have it - just show me the $$$. This area is finished for farming and has little potential for tourism or lifestyle...

Actually, I think tourism in the region has been hit pretty hard by the strong $AUD, which is not suprising as the resorts etc in the region were grossly overpriced to begin with. Margaret River and surrounds has become a haven catering to a niche clientelle who don't care if they are being blatently ripped off as they view this as a visible indicator of their wealth to the rest of the plebians.

Seriously, who would pay AUD$800.00 for an hours massage that involves simultaneously having a Spangled Seahorse inserted into your rectum, your scrotum exfoliated with Tahitian Pumice Stone, your teeth whitened with Limestone from the depths of the Mammoth Cave, and a fake tan applied that is made from Jewel Cave Spring Water and Boojidup river silt, an imported Mexican Midget smoking a joint of Fontes Finest walking up and down your back to re-align your spine whilst being fed Margaret River Venison canapes by a French backpacker on a work visa with amazingly perky boobies and having an I.V. bag of Leeuwin Estate Chardonney hooked up to your arm whilst the view through the huge glass windows frames Injidup Point twice overhead and mid-tide.
