A link to a web site that answers simple questions will do,but while i'm here i'll ask anyway.My question is should or will i have to claim set up expenses on a small home based business that i have incurred prior to the end of June NOW or can i claim them next year once the business is up and running? Its only about $1500 and i haven't even got the business name registered yet or an ABN,expecting to have it up and running in about 4-6 weeks.

Don't take advice from the internet/forumns. If operating a microbusiness do get advice from a good accountant that you can trust and build a relationship with.
This is free advice from a small business operator...not ataxation advisor.

Go here or see an accountant:

www.ato.gov.au/

I think you have to turn over money to be a business - otherwise it's classified as a hobby. It's hard to subtract expenses from your income if there is no income.

Ignorance can be an real advantage when starting your first business. I'm glad I knew f*^$ all when I started my business because if I actually knew what was involved I never would have pursued with it!

Stick with it. Learn. In five years time you'll pat yourself on the back stoked with the discovered ability to control your work life.

Good luck...

Having been self-employed for about 15 years up until 10 years ago, I think frant has given you good advice. Go talk to an accountant.

From what I remember (which isn't much after 25 years) I think start-up expenses weren't deductible anyway so you may want to be careful about exactly when your business kicks off and when it starts running up expense. But I could easily be wrong and/or things may well have changed. A tax accountant should know.

Be aware that whatever percentage of your house you claim is dedicated to the business, when you go to sell the house, that percentage will be liable for capital gains tax. Thus if you are only going to claim a few thousand dollars a year as business deductions now, it may cost you many times that as capital gains tax later on.
Talk to a good accountant. It will be one hour and $160 well spent.

In reply to the original quetion, I don't think you can't claim setup costs this year if you don't have a business up and running. You can claim them next year when your business has an income to claim against.

oops! I just read my last post and the last bit says exactly the opposite of what I meant.
Where I said "I don't think you can't claim setup costs this year if you don't have a business up and running. You can claim them next year when your business has an income to claim against." there was one too many negatives.
It should have been;
"I don't think you can claim setup costs this year if you don't have a business up and running. You can claim them next year when your business has an income to claim against."
Sorry sir. (my excuse is i'm old and decrepit. Not the real "Decrepit" but decrepit none the less. "
