Why is it that the same people that are happy to pay $3.80 for 700mls of bottled water complain about $1.50 for a litre of petrol?

Price of petrol dropped about 10c to 15c per litre as soon as the carbon tax was introduced. If the carbon tax is raised petrol will become even cheaper.

My hotel last night had $3.80 bottles of water right, in the kitchen, next to the tap.
If they've sold one I have no hope for the human race.

...imagine if it were beer.

$1.80/ltr for fuel and only $1/ltr for drinkable water around here.
I would prefer your scenario fingerbone as my car always drinks more than me.

I came back from Margarita/Venzuela a few weeks ago.

There, you could fill your petrol tank for 2 and a half Bolivars, which is about (I think) 32 cents - for a whole tank full!

On the other hand, the pipeline from the mainland for fresh water is supposedly leaking/poor quality so they recommend that you don't drink the tap water. I think the cost of a bottle of water was around 12 Bolivars, so maybe $1.50?

I think I prefer paying more for petrol and being able to drink tap water.

Those countries probably own their oil, get the profits and have low prices to aid businesses. We give it away for too little and then get ripped off buying it back

In this particular case, they have heaps of oil, but the population seem quite poor.

It appears that the government have mandated prices for some things at such a low level that the people that make those things cannot (do not want to) sell those things to make it worth it. Apparently these same things make it onto the black market where the real price is actually worth their while to sell it at.

Trust me, we seem to have a better system here! Nearly free petrol is no good if you have a country that needs a lot of infrastructure work.

so maybe solution is cheap , good, filtered (if somebody want) tap water
and electric vehicle at garage , solar panels on the home roof ?
At the rate electric companies pay you for electricity 8 cents for KWh is better to feed electric car then sell to the grid.
