Hi,

Had a bit of a worrying experience on Friday night after a great session at Kirra.

Got home, turned car off, went inside, made dinner, all the usual. About midnight I had to go past my car for some reason, and noticed the reverse lights on. Strange... I thought. Then had a look at the dashboard, all the engine lights were on. Opened the drivers door to be greeted by a cabin full of smoke. All of this is with no key in the ignition.

Disconnected the battery and had a think about it... sprayed some WD-40 down the guts of the ignition lock and all's good now.

Turns out that salt water from my car key (which I wear inside my harness) had leaked down in the guts of the ignition lock and shorted power to ignition. Salt water's conductive I guess.

Anyway if you take your key with you in the surf then make sure to dry it out thoroughly before sticking it in the ignition.

Nebbian, didn’t have that happen, but the hassle of not wanting an electronic key to get wet, is a constant challenge.
Inside glad bags are OK, but eventually some moisture gets in, and the pricks wont work until they dry off over a few days.

But there must be somebody out there that makes a water tight key holder that fits around neck or just inside wet suit?

Lucky you found it in time, ugly things to find is a burnt out car in your car port or garage.

I had a key cut so I could leave it in my harness pocket to use soley to unlock/lok the car. I lock my ignition keys in the car along with all the other keys that gravitate to the key ring. Works for me.

Aquapac make a waterproof bag for keys, cameras, phones etc that can be worn around the neck. Key bags start from $37.00.
Cheers

I have heard that people with hearing devices use jonnies to keep them waterproof. They're waterproof (you'd hope) and strong and I guess you just tie them at one end..

My advise would be to go for a non-lubricated version though!
