Many websites with video content are blocked for Australians. For example the BBC blocks most of its content. Many American sites block their content to Australian IP addresses. This is not a huge issue in itself, the sun keeps rising every morning and sets at night. Much of the content on these sites can be viewed through other means, though that depends on how popular they are.

However a friend of mine put me onto a DNS redirection service called UnoTelly. I checked it out last night and its pretty good. We watched a few recent shows from the US and UK plus some other shows. The set up was fairly painless and everything launches from their site.

I'm on a eight day trial. The VPN link has unlimited traffic which is great. If after the trial we decide to continue with it, it will cost either $5 a month or $48 for the year. So its not too expensive. My mate has signed up for a free trial of Netflix and says it basically has every movie more than a year old. If that is true its pretty impressive. He said Netflix costs about $8 a month.

So it seems to be a cheap alternative to pay TV. We have an ADSL2+ connection at home and it seemed fine. Any slowdowns were on the remote end.

I use HideMyAss VPN. It has the added bonus of encrypting your traffic etc which means nobody can snoop on what you're downloading. We have Netflix here in Japan, even though it's not locally available. VPN is about $7 a month, same with Netflix - less than 1/4 the price of ****ing Sky!!!

Recommend this site for searching and finding stuff, if you have country selectable VPN etc and Netflix, Hulu etc: www.moreflicks.com

Do you work for Foxtel?

Anyway signed up for Netflix. It seems quite comprehensive. I streamed a bit of one show as a test, Red Dwarf, and it was fine. It's strange that Netflix is not available in Australia. Probably too many vested interests happy making money out of a blocked off country. Just like Australian DVDs are in the South American region.

I have been using unotelly with netflix for about two months. I have it running on Sony Bravia TV so I just use the TV remote. No need to use computer etc.
I have all other US channels that Sony offers but some of them (Hulu for example) buffer/stutter quite a bit. Netflix is OK. We have ADSL2+, usual download speed 4-5 mbps.

Regarding Netflix content - definitelly don't have everything, for example I was looking for Big Lebowski and couldn't find it. They have a lot of movies and shows but not everything.
So definitelly make sure to try it well within your trial period.

The other minor issue I have is the need to update IP Address with unotelly every other day or so. Easily done through web browser but little annoying if you "just want to watch TV".

There is a link off the unotelly site to the NHL site. I checked it and from there you can watch NHL games for US$99 a year. I'm not sure if the NHL video is blocked to Australian IP addresses.

Yeah you could just like almost everything else that is available legitimately via the various paid services Australians are denied. We constantly hear Australians are the biggest bunch of content pirates in the world. It doesn't take Einstein to work out the reason for this is either we have to pay the "Australian tax", that mysterious tariff making stuff more expensive here than overseas, or we are blocked from viewing the stuff in the first place.

Meanwhile we keep being offered old fashioned and expensive Foxtel.
