I don't know about you guys, but the last couple of days we have had really weird tides here in Bunbury, with our high tides being lower than our predicted low tides for the last 3 days.

Check the DPI
http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/coastaldata/tidesandwaves/stormsurge-bunbury.html
When I was taking photos of the Australind estuary which I had never seen so low- others come up saying they had never seen it so low before. Some - who had just come through Mandurah said there was no water on either side of the Mandurah bridges (bone dry) and even saying the Dawesville channel had huge sandbanks sticking out of the water.

It wasn't until later in the evening as we were sitting around discussing the abnormal tides that we were warned by a friend with a rumour travelling around our town - apparently from those in the know....

"There is a 5 metre tide coming!"

Now of course this is probably just b******t, but in light of recent events in the Indian ocean we are quite intrigued as to where all our water is going.

A quick search of Google News tells of countless high tides flooding many places in the world over the last 7 or so days(since the 11th I think) Check it out.

So my questions to all knowledgable Seebreeze surfers is....

What is Mother Earth doing?
Is the 5m tide coming, are these tides normal?
Has mankind doomed the planet?
Should we be keeping our gear rigged up at home and our wetsuit nearby just in case?

Any info would be greatly appreiciated.

This is interesting.... I to have noticed some unusually low tides on the swan river lately. Would also be interested to know whats happening.

Titan has aligned itself with our moon recently, which causes a greater gravitational pull on the earths oceans, when this coincides with natural neap tides, we find extreme tidal movements, this has been exaggerated by the Tsunami effect, so my advice is to not panic just yet, however Astronomical charts do indicate that in 2034 all the palnets will be aligned along the same rotational axis of the Sun, and that this will cause unusually strong gravitational effects for a period of 2 weeks, so you can save your panic for then.

we also just had a big high pressure system going pass over our heads.( which tend to give low water level)
if you check the storm surge on dpi web site..the residual is mainly representing the effect of the atmospheric pressure on the sea water level. (ie low pressure system (=big storm) suck the water up = water level higher)
(cyclone up north may change level here too but I don't think there's any at the minute)

anyway, interesting..indeed the reef in mandurah was completely dry last week..( and I was blaming Hardie for forgetting to turn on the tap)

let's wait and see...

only when Hardie will finally stop gravitationning and aligned himself with Titan that the world will be safer

Really? Titan has aligned with our moon? Didn't hear about that. That wouldn't really affect us that much on it's own would it?
I hear there are rivers and oceans of methane and ethane on that moon, when the Huygens probe landed there on the 14th.

Can't wait till 2034 for our whole Solar System to align - Though nothing happened on May 05, 2000 when the conjunction of the 6 inner planets occured. (Even though everyone said it would)

Maybe you Meant the Syzygy, where the moon the earth and the sun aligned recently (which happens all the time) and along with other factors casued the canals in Venice to run dry.

They said the phenomenon is due to low pressure, that is, the good weather that coincides with the syzygy, the alignment of the moon, earth and sun.

Maybe the same thing is happening here.

Possibly a good time to go crabbing with a pushbike and a shovel?

you should check the effccts of diurnal tides, the moons pull and the centrifugal force of the earths rotation, have the strongest effect on the spring tides in the summer and again in winter. This combined with a high pressure system in summer you get low lows & low highs. And in winter a low p/s gives you high highs & high lows. There may be a few other things involved but I think thats the guts of it all.

What planet is Titan a moon off??? jupiter??? Either ways I am sure the big arse planet it is circling will have more effect on tides than the puny little mooon

Hardie can tell you extactly how deep the estuary is after high speed depth checking it the other day.

You all seen the movie "deep impact"

Got to give the Hardie fella his due he was pushing it at the time and he didn't back of, when he surfaced and stood up it was in 6" of water/mud.

Afterwards he was quite nonchalant in saying "I might gybe a bit earlier, it's a touch shallow there"
