G'Day all,

Now this is not a Windsurfing question at all. I searched for answers to my questions and came up with this forum where a few of you may know the answer to my problem.

I am thinking of constructing my own wide body guards for a car. I am thinking of using a foam core shaped accordingly, then fibreglass over it. What I need to know is what sort of foam can be used that is easy to shape, fairly strong and of course nice and cheap I have read of there being quite a few different types of foam out there so being totally new to this I am quite confused.
Also where are these products available from?

Hopefully someone in here has some idea of the best product for this particular situation.

G'Day Baz,
Hmmm, good question.
By shape, do you mean, "bend" or "carve".
5mm divinycell will bend in one plane to whell type radius easily enough. but if you want a complex curve, that's a different matter. You could shape that out of a block of Styrene.
Where are you??? no point giving west aus addresses if you're over East!!!

I should of been more specific.

I am thinking of quite a wide piece of foam (few inches) that could be bonded to the original guard and then carved to shape giving the guard a wider appearance. Then to fibreglass over it once I have the right shape.
I went to a local Body Kit place and they were no help at all.
Im really not sure if this is the best way to do it as I have nill experience when it comes to this, but I'm willing to give it a go.

Oh, and I'm on the Gold Coast.

Sounds like divinicell might be the go.If you need it a couple of inches thick it will be pretty expensive buying a whole sheet .Try going to a boat builder and seeing if they have any offcuts they will sell or give to you. Ive done this before and its saved a **** load of cash.

Baz,
Sounds like a good way, that's how I would takle it, but I'm used to working with foam and have enough scraps in the shed to do a job like that, pity you're on the wrong side of the country.
Can't help you with any gold coast supplyers, have you tried local surfboard builders, they may have scrap bits of polyurethane foam, that would be my preference for a job like that, shapes easily, and is compatible with all resin systems. Another alternative is blow it yourself, you can get foam in a can, you'd need to make a rough mould around the guard first. Mix the stuff up and pour it in. Look up plastics in the yellow pages.
If you go with styrene foam, you have to use epoxy resin, anything else will melt it!!!!!!!

Thanks heaps for the help guys.

I had never thought of approaching surfboard or boat builders and there are plenty of them around here. Hopefully I can accumulate enough scraps for the job.

Anyone know what a good price for this Divinycell is?

Last time I bought a sheet of d'cell, it was about $60 for a 2.4m X 1.2m X 5mm sheet, thicker stuff would be better for what you want and boatbuilders should have that.
