Sounds like the person the camping forum is making stuff up. Shellite has nothing to do with Shell.
It is just a solvent that is called different things in different countries. You wanta bottle of Shellite, white spirits is different and kinda similar to turps or turps subsitute so probably stinks too much in a lamp.

No hardware at all ?
Sure I have seen it in Woolies at some stage? But these things that were once commonly used fall out of fashion I guess

Shellite is a trademark of Shell Australia, says so right on the bottle I have on front of me, Diggers brand, contains 100% hydrocarbon liquid.

I'm also 99.9% sure it is just branded white spirit. I'll do some digging and get back to you.

Don't take my advice, I've done some more digging, what I said about shellite is correct but I have confused white spirit with white gas. White gas is good for stoves, not sure about white spirit.

be careful with shellite as it has a Carcinogen substance. Whit oil would be better I would assume as Shellite is more like turps. We used to clean down shade sails and Cafe Umbrellas with Shellite before they switched us to turps.

I clean my airfilters with it
It runs my camping stoves
I was my hands with it after using grease
I clean my windows with it.

Etc...

Put nothing on your hands that you wouldnt put on your John Thomas. So get gloves for your hands.

Pfffftttt I thought this was about Bacardi I didn't get past the "white spirits"

ya no it's no good, we had the EPA come in and give a talk on why it is so bad due to some ingredient that is a carcinogen and can cause cancer.... blah blah blah, it dissolves really quick that's why we liked using it, then they changed to Turps which was **** for cleaning vinyl umbrellas and shade sails, dissolved just as quick but didn't get stains out as well..

Do yourself a favour and don't use ULP in anything used for camp cookers or heaters.
There are lots of volatile components in ULP which vary in proportion depending on the season. They evaporate out at room temperature and make a very explosive mix which can float around the area and go bang when you light it up, or even from a static discharge or spark when in transport.
If that's all you've got then practice eating raw food.

Do a look for shellite names. I bought 25l from a cleaning supplies company for $75. They called it x55. Been using it in my stove and lantern daily for the past month without issues.
I've read of people mixing 50/50 white spirits and up. This increases burn temp for stoves.
